I don't feel that it's the worst game ever. It was an adventure game with an objective. It was pretty ambitious for a 2600 game (so was raiders of the lost ark). If you had the manual, you were set. Unfortunately no one ever reads the manual.

It's become the posterboy of the crash, that's why people rip it to shreds. I was playing games at that time, and I can tell you the atari had plenty of other craptacular efforts that could take the title.
