As I've said, roomfulls of Blue Darknuts are one of the evilest creations of the NES era. At least in Ninja Gaiden you could memorize the location of every mid-jump bat.
I have nightmares about blue darknuts...
I hate those freaking things.

That, puzzles both in and out of dungeons. Most of the combat isn't so difficult, I find. Zelda and Zelda II easily had the most difficult combat sequences in the whole series. There's also a bit of rat-in-a-mazz-ness to the original, similiar to the original Metroid but not in severity. Phew.

I wouldn't say that it is hard, just tedious. I love this game because there are no hints as to what is next. Even the hint giving old man is very vague. There is a lot of just random exploring and stumbling on the next step. Where as in the newer games (which I also love) every person you talk to is telling you where to go next. And I would say the enemies have no real tactic like the newer games. Just attack and attack again until the hordes are defeated. Awesome.

I don't really mind the mental challenge, like finding where to go next. It is the onslaught of enemies that kills me (literally).
I poured like 100 hours on the NES version when i was a lil kiddy and only got up until the 4th dungeon.. :(

It certainly took me a while to get used to the combat in the original, after being used to the (easier and more intuitive) combat of the GB, SNES and GBA games - but after you get the hang of it, it gets much better. There is just a steep(er) learning curve.

Do you have any tips/strategies that you would like to pass along with the combat? Is it just a matter of knowing each enemy and the best strategy?

I haven't played the game in a few weeks due to other things. One of the things that gave me trouble were those flying things that come to a rest every so often. Apparently you can kill them only when they come to a rest.

Another strategy is that you don't necessarily need to kill everything that you come across. Sometimes avoidance is the best strategy.

Ah the Peahats. Its true, you can only kill them when they are stopped. A better question is why are you killing them at all?

The best strategy that anyone can give you is to take the time to figure out what style of fighting works best for you, mostly subweapons. Most players opt to use the boomerang to stun then melee or they will just go straight melee. I have a friend who is rubbish with the boomerang, but is a crack shot with the candle. Im a bomb man myself, though you dont get many mistakes with those. So what I advise is to take the time to figure out which works best for you. Combat past that is based on odd tricks and outthinking the AI.

Other than that, always pick the heart over the potion and once you get 250 rupees go get the blue ring - or once you get 150 rupees, go get the 100 in the far upper right and then get the blue ring.

Why the hell do people consider Zelda an RPG?

It's a role playing game in the sense that you are Link. Its more of an action adventure rpg, rather than a turnbased or strategy one.

I still don't see it as an RPG. I see it as an action adventure/puzzle sort of game. It has NO elements of an RPG.

And if your argument is that "you are Link" then that means Donkey Kong, Metroid, and Sonic are RPG's.

Zelda isn't an RPG.

Zelda is a western RPG, not a JRPG.
