The PSP started a lot like that - developers making crappy console ports simply because the system can nearly handle them. Unfortunately, loading times and lack of 2 analog sticks usually killed those console wannabe games.
On the bright side, developers aren't doing that as much anymore.
Since you're on racketboy, you gotta check out Ultimate Ghosts n Goblins (or is it Ghouls? i dunno), Mega Man Powered Up, and some cool classic collections from Capcom, Sega, and Midway (and, er, EA). FF 1 and II are nice looking, but they almost look a little too glossy for my tastes. And they're so damn easy. The FF Tactics re-make is definitely worth getting - soooo much better than the original. Really shows what a fantastic game it is. And if you have a soft spot for FFVII, Crisis Core is surprisingly good. Valkyrie Profile is good if you don't wanna lay down the cash for the original.
X-men Legends 2, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, and the Lego games have a nice classic appeal to them, even more so if you're a fan of the respective licenses.
And of course, a couple of true classics like LocoRoco, Lumines, and Patapon.
And, if you're into that sort of thing, the PSP is easily hackable and can run NES, SNES, Genesis, GBA, and SMS emulators pretty well. Just sayin'.
