Well yes, I did beat 4 twice, and got maybe seven hours into 5 and had a little fun with the class stuff, but just stopped. I do agree, the medieval stuff is a big problem for me with most RPGs, but I think the pacing and structure of 4 and 5 are just much more fulfilling than 6 appears to be. 6 always felt very restrictive to me. It seems like it's 100% limiting, and you're constantly being punished for the way the story flows, and not of your own actions.

You can argue that 7 does exactly that with Aeris' death, but that's only one instance, and its impact makes up for it. 6 on the other hand seems to do this many, many times, leaving me feeling very...claustrophobic and giving me no choices on anything. If 6 opens up and gives you full control like 20 hours later, that's fine, but I don't have the tolerance for that shit. My RPGs need to let me play how I want to right from the start. You can never risk making the gameplay suffer for the sake of a story, because there has never been one story that everybody likes.

The whole steampunk deal with 6 also just didn't interest me, even though it should have. It just doesn't seem like they did much with it. I think 9 did a much better job melting steampunk with medieval, as well as a little modern upper class.

When talking musically, it's hard to believe, but I honestly think Nobou just kept getting better as the series went on, then peaked with 7 (not a single dub track in the set), then got it half right with 8, and a quarter right with 9. Then as we know, he stepped out with 10 and beyond, and musically, those games suffered tremendously.

RPGs I liked before FF6? I'd need to see some kind of chart to really say, because I was a genesis boy growing up, and again, I only got into SNES when emulation started getting perfected around 1999 or so. I'm not so good with SNES release dates.

Edit: And before you say it, I know that in 4, its pretty much a running gag with characters dying for the sake of the story. But they all seem to come back before you know it, and with 5 party members, you're always left with options. Plus, its a very short game, at like 15 hours.
I think your problem is with JRPGs in general then. All of them are really restrictive. Only CRPGs, or as they have come to be known now, western rpgs give you true freedom. Try playing Baulder's Gate 2

I've hated almost all the western RPGs I've ever tried, including BG2. I've enjoyed a good 100 jRPGs over the years. Your assumption is way off. You wanted my reasons and I gave them. Now you just blow me off with this "oh you hate the genre" shit. Don't insult me.

where exactly did I insult you? And if you read your own post you say, you didn't like it cause it restricted you, to follow the story, and that's what most JRPGs do and most CRPGs don't.

OMFG. I got to the part in Disk3 where you play that stupid game of green light red light, as frog cid, against a 6 minute timer and ARRRRGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

I hate the person who thought that thing was a good idea.

Otherwise I was pleasantly surprised with the story at the begining in disk 3. Unlike previous PS1 Final Fantasy's, this game had you in the dark for pretty much the first half of it.

Can't wait to see how the story ends.

Sorry I know you posted this a while ago but it's complete claptrap! How is Level/Gold grinding and asinine side-questing restricting you to follow a story? The structure of most JRPG removes you from any storyline however well (or not) it's told. Infact in recent memory I can only remember 'Eternal Sonata' actually focusing on story over those other things. I can't count the times I've played a DQ game only after hours of grinding, not being able to remember where I'm to go next.

I'm not saying JRPGS are open path, TBH I'm kind of validating the reasons Mozgus didn't like 6.

Eternal Sonata is completely linear, no world map corridor style dungeons and as a result the story was more cohesive as I wasn't encouraged to go and help a little girl find a duck or something. when story is the focus of an entire genre of games surely it's detrimental to deviate?

FF9 has best atmosphere in series, world is created much better than in any FF game
every location drains your soul and Uematsu had best works for this game (he also said something about this)
Even if I go to hell, I will live to the end of this world. And if the world does not come to an end... I will destroy it with my own hands!

Coincidentally, I tried to play Baldurs Gate II for the first time the other day. Couldn't do it. The micro managing drove me nuts.

And on topic, I loved FFIX. I remember playing it (10 years ago?) when it first came out and thinking to myself 'THIS is Final Fantasy. I'm saving princesses and fighting with swords'.

It felt like a return to form. FF7 and FF8 were GOOD games, IMO, but like FFXIII most recently...they didn't feel like Final Fantasy games.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

I have played FF VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, X-2, XII, XIII (not much)...

And i don't understand the love for FFVI either. Well... i can understand if it's your first ever RPG but the sheer vagueness of it sometimes is sooo frustrating! Some of the things are up to pure luck or reading an FAQ!! How did you guys manage when you played it when it came out?

FF7 was my first final fantasy btw.

Ontopic... FFIX's characters are so bland... it's the reason i dropped the game and sold it (out of sheer rage) 10 hours into the game.
