This post is about something that might, or might not be true, something might not exist in the purest form, but lets exaggerate it and state:
In the world of retro gaming there are two kinds of collectors:
- The Quantity Collector
- The Quality Collector
The quantity collector often settles on a brand (or ALL the brands of a domain) and collects fiercely, the more the better, the rarer the better, are willing to pay hundreds (or thousands) of your favorite currency to get a signed catridge which there are only 5 of in the world.
The quality collector doesnt really care about whether the cartridge is signed or not, he buys the games in mint condition only because that looks better on the shelve, and it's always nice to have a manual. This kind of collector collects games that means something to him (or her) and have some personal value - either sentimental, the cover art, the music or simply because of the gameplay. This kind of collector might even sell items because they pollute the collection: "I don't want anyone, not even my self, to see [Insert random EA sports title] on the shelve!".
Both kinds of collectors can be fanboys, with different reasons. It definatly makes the life more easy for a quality collector to be a fanboy, there is simply less to collect - which at somepoint perhaps leads to endorsing another brand when every item of the first one has been collected.
If the quality collector settles on a brand, he will easily develop into being a bitter fanboy. "All the best titles have been released on [Insert some brand here], I frown upon anything released on the puny [Insert the other brand here] hardware". This affected fanboyism often leads to envy - "Oh why must Shadow of the Colossus be released on Playstation?" - I know this slightly from my self
The fanboyism for the quality collector might also be of economical reasons (which I definatly know from my self), it is generally economically wise to convince your self that all other brands than the one you have chosen is crap !
And again some simply acccept that you cannot have everything
But what kind of collector are you? are there more kinds? am I being overly general (ofcourse I am)? Have you cought your self wanting to sell a game because it did not express your taste - like the [insert random mid nineties europop compilation] on your cd shelve?
I hope I can start a debate, and hopefully you will have this discussion with a smile. Passions like retro gaming require a bit of self irony to be enjoyed the most!
