The Quantity Collector and The Quality Collector?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

The Quantity Collector and The Quality Collector?

Post by Svovl »

I am quite new to the whole retro gaming scene, or atleast new to it now that it is called retro gaming :-)

This post is about something that might, or might not be true, something might not exist in the purest form, but lets exaggerate it and state:

In the world of retro gaming there are two kinds of collectors:
- The Quantity Collector
- The Quality Collector

The quantity collector often settles on a brand (or ALL the brands of a domain) and collects fiercely, the more the better, the rarer the better, are willing to pay hundreds (or thousands) of your favorite currency to get a signed catridge which there are only 5 of in the world.

The quality collector doesnt really care about whether the cartridge is signed or not, he buys the games in mint condition only because that looks better on the shelve, and it's always nice to have a manual. This kind of collector collects games that means something to him (or her) and have some personal value - either sentimental, the cover art, the music or simply because of the gameplay. This kind of collector might even sell items because they pollute the collection: "I don't want anyone, not even my self, to see [Insert random EA sports title] on the shelve!".

Both kinds of collectors can be fanboys, with different reasons. It definatly makes the life more easy for a quality collector to be a fanboy, there is simply less to collect - which at somepoint perhaps leads to endorsing another brand when every item of the first one has been collected.
If the quality collector settles on a brand, he will easily develop into being a bitter fanboy. "All the best titles have been released on [Insert some brand here], I frown upon anything released on the puny [Insert the other brand here] hardware". This affected fanboyism often leads to envy - "Oh why must Shadow of the Colossus be released on Playstation?" - I know this slightly from my self :-)
The fanboyism for the quality collector might also be of economical reasons (which I definatly know from my self), it is generally economically wise to convince your self that all other brands than the one you have chosen is crap ! :-)
And again some simply acccept that you cannot have everything :?

But what kind of collector are you? are there more kinds? am I being overly general (ofcourse I am)? Have you cought your self wanting to sell a game because it did not express your taste - like the [insert random mid nineties europop compilation] on your cd shelve?

I hope I can start a debate, and hopefully you will have this discussion with a smile. Passions like retro gaming require a bit of self irony to be enjoyed the most!

I'm a quality collector when it comes to original copies of games. I only buy the stuff I either will play a lot or has sentimental value to me.
I see the super-large collections as a waste for the most part.
I'm a quantity collector of game ROMs and ISOs -- see this post:

As for the fanboy thing, I say thing like the "why is this game only on the Playstation", but that's because I refuse to buy Sony product because of their quality issues.
Plus, I don't have the money to buy every console -- and the Playstation playform is on the bottom of my list (for the above reason)
I enjoy emulating PS1 games because I don't need their hardware.

Good post, BTW :)

Quality Sega fanboy collector.

I only collect games I like. mint condition is preferred but not required. And I don't just stick to Sega... I just love Sega that is all. And as Racket said about the Sony thing... yeah I say that too.

And even though I'm a fanboy of Sega doesn't mean I can't say they are really screwing things up right now (sonic 360 cough... DON'T BUY, rent, borrow, download, look at, utter the name of)

Yeah, I'm not a fan of Sega's recent stuff.
Other than a few exceptions, I'd say Sega's near the bottom of the barrel right now.

Hmm I'm not sure what I would call myself.

I prefer to purchase games I would enjoy but at the same time I find myself buying games that I guess would fit a "brand". Examples I purchased Dirge of Cerberus recently (used for 20 CAD  ); I knew it was not very well received but it was attached to the FFVII brand so I had to get it for my collection eventually. But I have limits as well I'm not going to go and buy a psp anytime soon or perhaps ever just because another FFVII game is coming out for it.

I am selective with what I buy I don't need every single release for (insert system name) or every game from certain developers. I am also very CHEAP. Sad to say but I buy alot of games used; recent stuff of course and sometimes I'll hold out on games because I know certain ones won't be million copy sellers so the price will drop rapidly.

Probably the reason behind my PS2 collection being quite large; prices fall fast and it was the currant generation when I really started collecting games and well having the money to blow on games. Or perhaps the market has changed; have to admit games are cheaper than they have ever been. Walk into your local store and any game that might have slipped under the radar is sitting in a bin at 10-20 dollars.

My saturn collection is small because I finally bought a saturn well...after the dreamcast was off the market. Everything that is a must have USA or Japan release is expensive.

On the topic of selling I hate selling my games; am I embarrassed with some of my games on my sweet looking shelves? ......yes.

And I own two EA sports games
NHL 98 for PS1 and SSX for ps2

Daigr, you sound a lot like me. I'm a sucker for a $5 used game at gamestop and I am also pretty good at waiting for the game to come down in price. Sometimes, though, games won't come down in price, but instead just vanish altogether. Atlus games I have to bite te bullet and pay the $50 for, for example.

I guess I'm a quantity collector. After all, a game has to really suck to not be worth $5. And I rarely pass the games i buy, I must admit.

I'd say I'm quality, but hey, if I see something I already have or might find some use to, I'll get it, which leads to ~4 SNES and ~5 Gennys and ~4 DC's and so on, yet as of lately, I am trying to do away with most of the extra stuff.
