What should I look for when buying a Steering Wheel?

I want to buy a cheap one to play OutRun 2006 and Spy Hunter (MAME). I don't want one too fancy but I want something that can handle the heavy drifting of OutRun.

Also I wonder whether I should pick one with a traditional gear or one with the gear incorpored in the wheel. The second type seems more common and seeing how OutRun 2 SP uses it I'm now biased towards it.

I use the official Microsoft Wheel on PC and 360, it's fine for all my driving needs plus it has force feedback (not just rumble) for the games that support it.

I am tempted to make a custom or salvage an up/down gear stick just for that added bit of realism, I can deal with flappy paddles for gear change but I long for a real gear stick.

The logitech ex wheels are good for PS2/3 so I've heard and they are pretty cheap. (about £30 in this country)

Speaking as a Racing sim fanatic, it depends on what you're looking for. Do you want 240 degree rotation or 900? If 240 is fin, then get a Logitech Momo or a Driving force EX. If you want more rotation, get a Logitech Driving Force Pro, Driving force GT, or a G25 (only if you're serious though, those are kinda pricey). I wouldn't get any budget wheel other than a Logitech.

The rotation of the wheel itself. 900 is like a real car, but 240 doesn't require you to go hand over hand to go from right lock to left lock. If I were you, I would just buy a Driving Force Pro, relatively cheap, and it's adjustable so you can have both rotations. Plus, the pedals are great.

I was going to go into the whole 900/240 debate but I don't think that is what the guy is looking for. Especially when value is concerned. The driving force pro (one of the best wheels you can buy for the price) are kinda hard to find now. They are pretty decently priced used though. It just depends whether you want a brand new wheel or a used one.

Just had a look at that G25, I'm drooling. Does that thing have a clutch pedal?! OMG WANT. I'd love to be able have fully realistic manual drive. What games would possibly use it though aside from GTR2?

Mad Catz MC2, it's a sturdy and durable wheel, that hasn't given me any problems in the five or so years I've owned it.

rFactor, RACE, Live for Speed, Richard Burns Rally, and a few others. Any competitive sim should provide support.
