New Xbox coming or something?
Re: New Xbox coming or something?
While I think Microsoft would have to be insane to release another system, if they released another version of the Xbox 360 - say, one that is region free - I'd be down for that.

The 360 is region-free. It's some of the games that are not.the7k wrote:While I think Microsoft would have to be insane to release another system, if they released another version of the Xbox 360 - say, one that is region free - I'd be down for that.

The Dreamcast, Neo Geo, Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, Jaguar CD and even the freakin' Turbographx-16 have all had games recently released on them (or have games coming out soon). Commercial games. In the case of the Genesis, they are still making new ones. According to your logic, these systems are still relevant.elvis wrote:If a console is in active sale, and has new titles for it, then it's "relevant". Not too hard to figure out, really. Bleeding edge gamers are the vocal minority, which is something people tend to forget (with a little help from the media).Breetai wrote:What were you smoking when you thought that one up?
Did you consider the NES relevant in 1995, or the Genesis relevant in 1998? How about the SNES is 2001? The PS1 in 2004? The N64 is 2006?
Sorry, but you're standing alone on this one.

Well then, they need to fix that then, because all the games that I do want only work on Japanese 360s.Breetai wrote:The 360 is region-free. It's some of the games that are not.

Now you're just being pedantic. It's obvious that these new "commercial" games are totally unlicensed and unauthorised by the original console manufacturers.Breetai wrote:The Dreamcast, Neo Geo, Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, Jaguar CD and even the freakin' Turbographx-16 have all had games recently released on them (or have games coming out soon). Hardly. There's plenty of folks in this very thread who've said the same thing. And likewise most of the people in the games biz are saying the same thing themselves (including professional acquaintances of mine in the industry - I work as a sysadmin for 3D/film/tv/games studios).Breetai wrote:Sorry, but you're standing alone on this one.

So you decide to call out fanboys by making a huge fanboy post?ZeroAX wrote:There's no way sony is coming out with a new console, for at least 5-6 more years. That bloody thing cost them a fortune to develop, it still sells for a high price (and in my opinion, for such an expensive machine, it's sales are outstanding, and only fanboys can't see the big picture (twice the price, only 10mil difference in userbase, which was the difference the 360 and ps3 had, when the ps3 launched)), and we have still to see most of the famous franchises make their way to it (ffs 3 years into the machine and still no FF)
now I wouldn't be totally surprised, if MS came out with a new console, in the next 2-3, mostly because, in their frantic rush, to outsell sony, they have dropped the price of the 360 too much. Instead of slowly dropping the price, over the span of this generation, so to maximize profits from hardware, they thought it would be more important that they had a bigger userbase than sony. well they DO have a bigger userbase than sony, but it's not that big to be worth, losing all they money they could be making if they sold it for 300 euro instead.
So I can see MS coming with a new console, now that they have a brand name, so they price it for more, and don't make the same mistake again

I was just saying, their business plan doesn't make sense. They have a good brand name now, why the heck would they sell the console for so low.
where do you see the fanboy propaganda?

Ummmm... aren't you? That was exactly my point!!!elvis wrote:Now you're just being pedantic.Breetai wrote:The Dreamcast, Neo Geo, Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, Jaguar CD and even the freakin' Turbographx-16 have all had games recently released on them (or have games coming out soon). Look at what you're claiming; that the average lifespan on a console is 10+ years. Aside from the numerous consoles that don't make it even close to 10 years (most of the pre-crash consoles), the early-90s wannabes (TG-16, 3DO, Jaguar, Sega CD, 32X), a bunch of handhelds, Dreamcast, X-Box, etc., even the main players usually didn't crack the 10-year point. Look at the Super Nintendo (I'll go with the US version here). It came out in 1991. It sure as hell wasn't relevant in 2001. It was officially discontinued in 1999, but it was basically dead well before that. The last official game came out in 1997. Effectively, the life of the SNES was from 1991-1997. That's 6-7 years for one of the most popular systems. The Genesis went a bit longer. It started in 1989, but was effectively dead in 1997. Technically, the last game was in 1998... but that wasn't much more than the muscle spasms of a dead person. On a technicality, you can maybe claim about 10 years for the Genesis.
The NES lasted about 11 years, but was obsolete for the last few. The Playstation also lasted 11, but was it really relevant in 2004? Gosh no. It was effectively dead years prior. The technically lasted about 14 years, but did anyone count it after 1985/86? The only console that wasn't on extreme life support after 10 years was the Gameboy. That. is. it. The PS2 is going to make it, but it's the exception.
Very few consoles have cracked the 10 year mark. For those that have, they were usually on serious life support. The 2600 was not relevant in 1986, NES was not relevant in 1995, the Genesis was collecting dust when people were playing Final Fantasy VII in 2007, the SNES wasn't even hooked up to anyone's TV (except for the type of people who come to these forums) in 2000, and the only Playstation games being played in 2004 were classics in a PS2 system.
The average lifespan for a console is not even close to 10+ years.
Hardly. There's plenty of folks in this very thread who've said the same thing.[/quote]BS. I've read through the thread. Nobody is agreeing with you that the average life of a console is 10+ years. NOBODY. You're making stuff up.Breetai wrote:Sorry, but you're standing alone on this one.
Most of the people in the video game industry say that the average lifespan of a console is 10 years? Name one person that says that and quote them. Sony claims that the PS3 has a 10 year lifecycle... and uses the figures from the PS1 and PS2 to support that claim. Typical company BS. Sure the PS1 was technically supported in 2004, but effectively it was finished by then. The PS2 will be 10 years. If this generation lasts 10 years, it will definitely be the exception (2006/7-2015/6... good luck). And likewise most of the people in the games biz are saying the same thing themselves (including professional acquaintances of mine in the industry - I work as a sysadmin for 3D/film/tv/games studios).
BTW, what does being a system administrator have to do with business marketing within the game industry? Nobody cares.
