Fighters are better balanced now then they were back in the day. That was definitely a problem though.HellHammer wrote:But then EVERYONE plays as Sagat...

A current example :
Some people have real trouble getting over match-up problems in SF4. As Dylan said fighters are far better balanced now but they are still not perfect. No matter what, certain match-ups between characters will seem harder than others because they are. If a character is really that badly nerfed, the win is that much more awesome. Why else have Dan in the game?
Zangief vs Akuma in SF4 is a solid example. I play neither character but have seen plenty of matches at tournaments lately. Zangief and Akuma can both be played extremely scrubby or with a high level of skill. They both have extremely annoying tactics that if unchecked can make you feel like they are cheap.
Zangief has one move that is very strong. Spinning Lariat is an extremely powerful and high priority move in SF4. It starts up fast, rotates long, and wins against the majority of moves in the game. The input for the move (of course) is 3x punch or kick thats it. Combined with Green Hand, SPD, Splash, and a crazy fast ultra grab he can be a beast. He si my worst match up with Balrog my main character. I just keep in mind he has a match up like me. Akuma!
This may not be true all the time but in my experience Zangief players just hate runaway Akuma. Akuma has almost no life compared to other players in SF4, when he takes hits he dies quick. Runaway Akuma involves air fireballs and a dive kick that just straight up beats Zangief's lariat. When Zangeif gets inside Akuma teleports out of danger and repeats the loop. This makes Zangief players anxious. Before you know if Zangief rushing in wrecklessy and eats some damage, teleport into runaway loop.
To the scrub this is cheap, and not fair because it just beats them. To a player this is an example of zoning and playing the match up perfectly. Zangief players beat Akuma all the time I'm sure. This is just an example of a match up that really seem to piss off Zangief players, who destroy me regularly

Realistically, you can pretty much use most characters and classes cheaply. All that it really boils down to is who you play against, and whether they're into that or not. What I like are games that can be played cheaply, but someone with reasonable skill will always beat someone who's just firing a rocket launcher or mashing buttons.
