Not really surprised he's saying that, since Mozgus has expressed his opinion on the subject before. The only thing I've never heard him mention is if the game's music interested him in any way. In fact, I don't think I've ever heard Moz mention the music in a Final Fantasy game. Guess I'm not paying attention.

No, I was referring to 2 in Japan. I got a translation patch and was astounded at how terrible the game was. It was really, really, bad. Shame.

Of course I love Nobou's stuff. There's just nothing I can say that hasn't been said before about his work. Still, 7 is by far his peak.

wow lovely post from a moderator gratz.

besides I was referring only to PS1 ff games.

And yeah I have to agree that the battles are way too slow, even when I turned the battle speed to fast, it's still slow

Hey now, moderators are allowed to hold dissenting opinions just as much as anyone else. As long as he doesn't devolve into something like "All you fuckwits who think <game> is good need to take a long walk off a short pier" it's all good.

Fixed.
I've only played 6,7,9 and 10 and 6 was my first RPG so I'm always going to that nostalgia bias for it so I won't be any good at arguing for 6, but I'm curious as why you hated it so much. It seems to me that the music alone keeps it from being the worst FF, did you play it in it's time or did you check it out later?

I've given it half a dozen chances ever since SNES emulation was viable. It doesn't matter when I first tried it, because there's many other old SNES RPGs I didn't try until long after 2000, and I loved them. There's nothing more to say really. It just doesn't catch my attention at all.

it's just I would love to hear your arguments on the subject. it's just that I loved it, it's my favorite FF of all time, and I played it after 8 (and a demo of 7).

plus, the game came out in 93, only 2 years into the console, how much older snes rpgs are you talking about? ff 4 and 5?

(haven't even tried those, because I didn't like the medieval setting at the time,)

Uh, chief? The game came out in 94, and the NTSC-U version was late-94. And there are well over a hundred RPGs on the console, any number of which he might have played before Final Fantasy 6. If it wasn't for him, hey whatever. Just because its my favorite or your favorite doesn't mean it has to be his. I've known some folks that hated it because they were dead set against steampunk, for one.

Well yes, I did beat 4 twice, and got maybe seven hours into 5 and had a little fun with the class stuff, but just stopped. I do agree, the medieval stuff is a big problem for me with most RPGs, but I think the pacing and structure of 4 and 5 are just much more fulfilling than 6 appears to be. 6 always felt very restrictive to me. It seems like it's 100% limiting, and you're constantly being punished for the way the story flows, and not of your own actions.

You can argue that 7 does exactly that with Aeris' death, but that's only one instance, and its impact makes up for it. 6 on the other hand seems to do this many, many times, leaving me feeling very...claustrophobic and giving me no choices on anything. If 6 opens up and gives you full control like 20 hours later, that's fine, but I don't have the tolerance for that shit. My RPGs need to let me play how I want to right from the start. You can never risk making the gameplay suffer for the sake of a story, because there has never been one story that everybody likes.

The whole steampunk deal with 6 also just didn't interest me, even though it should have. It just doesn't seem like they did much with it. I think 9 did a much better job melting steampunk with medieval, as well as a little modern upper class.

When talking musically, it's hard to believe, but I honestly think Nobou just kept getting better as the series went on, then peaked with 7 (not a single dub track in the set), then got it half right with 8, and a quarter right with 9. Then as we know, he stepped out with 10 and beyond, and musically, those games suffered tremendously.

RPGs I liked before FF6? I'd need to see some kind of chart to really say, because I was a genesis boy growing up, and again, I only got into SNES when emulation started getting perfected around 1999 or so. I'm not so good with SNES release dates.

Edit: And before you say it, I know that in 4, its pretty much a running gag with characters dying for the sake of the story. But they all seem to come back before you know it, and with 5 party members, you're always left with options. Plus, its a very short game, at like 15 hours.
