What Is Your Dream Job?

Post by racketboy »

To be honest, I don't know what I want to do when I grow up...
I'd kinda a jack-of-all-trades, master of none.
I'm happy with what I'm doing, but I'd love to hear what your hopes and dreams are.

I'd like to own or found a small game development studio someday.

Sitting around playing games and making acerbic comments in my own video game store. High Fidelity but games instead of records. Profitability would be impossible hehe.
Let my legs shake me to sleep, and don't wake me when I sweat on my sheets.

If you're looking for a so-so dream job...

Post by sv650touring »

I'm about to leave my job here in Sarasota. IT Coordinator for the FSU College of Medicine Sarasota Regional Campus. If you don't mind working for a pittance, then the Job itself is great. It is so easy, I often skip lunch because it would be such a huge increase in exertion.

I live literally 2 small blocks from the beach ($550/mo 1BR/1BA), and even though it is the dead of winter, it is t-shirt and flip-flops weather. The only problem is I don't care about the beach or the sunshine, I like it cold and dry. Plus if you crave a big city, Sarasota is an hour south of the Tampa/St. Pete area.

Basically the hardest part is sitting through the hour-long meetings 3-4 times per week. The students are only here on Wednesdays and most of the tech support is just handholding. This job is laid back even by state worker AND IT standards. There is no on-site IT supervision, but you constantly have access to the main campus IT dept via phone/IM/email.

When I go, they are going to need someone desperately. That is because the job "requirements" are a Masters degree and a bunch of experience, but they only want to pay in the low 30's. Instead they got me with my HS diploma and under 3yrs of actual experience (but you know how resumes are... it looked like 4 years). I figured this would make good resume padding (Fancy job title) and be easier than my last job.

Let me know if the description didn't turn you off. These are good folks to work with and I feel kinda bad about leaving them.

Why are IT job requirements always so out of whack? Human resources is really the worst enemy of IT/IS...
