Burned Dreamcast games.

Post by KholdStare »

Hey, I have burned a few games for my DC, and I was wondering, do the burnt games wear down the DC's laser more than a normal DC game? and can they break the DC eventually? Thanks.

Not quite sure. Probably does more gradual damage to the Dreamcast. I refuse to bootleg anything, so I wouldn't know.
Systems: SNES, PS1, GBA SP, Gamecube, DS Lite, Wii, PS3 (Fully Backwards Compatible), Dreamcast, Nintendo 64, Sega Genesis, a Sega CD, and a Sega Saturn.

You can definitely hear the laser working much harder with most burns so in theory it would die quicker.

This has been a debate for some time now, I can say that I bought my DC at launch and have been playing burns for about 4 years and it still works fine.

I think a lot of it comes down to how you treat it also. Letting it breath by not putting it in an enclosure or sitting it on the carpet. Dropping, hitting, yanking around or any abuse will shorten the life of it. It as incredible to me how people pay so much for some of these systems and just abuse the hell out of them.

I would say if your kind to it that it should last for years and years. My original Xbox probably has over 1000 hours on it as we use it to watch Divx, (I dont have cable) and it is always on. But I handle it tenderly and keep it well ventilated. It sees nothing but burns, and has worked flawlessly.

Believe me, I treat ALL of my consoles like new born babies. It's placed neatly on my stand and has never been dropped or anything. I love it.

I would not worry about it then. If you are really worried about it though I would suggest researching how discs are burnt and pressed and then compare the two methods with how a laser actually reads the disc. It has been my opinion that they both place the same wear and tear on a drive. My opinion though, probably not worth more than anyone elses LOL......

A Dreamcast will only cost you about $20 at a flea market. I know, thanks to my copies of Marvel vs Capcom 2 and Jet Grind Radio, that GD-ROMs can start under-performing just due to overuse. Both these games have points where the music will just cut out for no apparent reason, and I've taken damn good care of them.

As such, I never put a real game into my Dreamcast. I'm not going to have another GD-ROM get fucked up. I'd rather buy another Dreamcast than another copy of Marvel vs Capcom 2.

Sounds like you may be having a problem with the travel of the laser. Maybe the motor is going, or the gearing is wearing out.
