Retro Resurrection - Kings Quest VI

Post by HappehLemons »

Introducing a new series I've created called Retro Resurrection. This is my first finished review for the series and I'm focusing on Kings Quest VI in it! I'd love to do more if people enjoy this. I worked pretty hard on it so I hope everyone likes it, and if you do please spread the word! Check it out when you get the chance, feedback would be highly appreciated. :D

I had a King's Quest game as a child. I can't remember which one, but you got turned into a goblin or some nonsense. I couldn't understand what was going on or how to play and never got into it.
Are they actually good? If so, maybe I should look it out again one day and try again.

Actually, I just looked it up on Wikipedia, and it was King's Quest VII. That game was freaky as hell for a 7 year old with no clue what to do! :o

Kings Quest VI was definitely the pinnacle of the series. I did like VII, but I never liked the whole cartoon graphics thing they had going on, but at least it's better then the live action actors a lot of the games were using at the time. But I wouldn't go as far as to highly recommend the rest.
IMO anything older then V is pretty dated and would be hard to enjoy unless you're a huge fan. And then there's Kings Quest VIII. It was nothing like the others, they turned it into an action game, never played it to be honest..

Ah man, I remember King's Quest, with it's horrendously limited color palette, and the bloody impossible name the troll puzzle. I managed to beat it once, but just once.

It's been forever since I played a King's Quest game, but VI always was a good one. I will never forget giving the man in the black robe a mint. It's a shame I never beat that game.

Oh no, I'd disagree. KQI and II don't hold up very well, sure. They're just scavenger hunts really. III and IV were really deep games with wonderful puzzles, locations, and characters. Sneaking down to the basement while Manaan is away in KQIII, opening that giant tome in search of some special magic that will help you defeat the evil wizard and win your freedom is one the most thrilling moments in gaming IMO.

But I guess that would make me a "huge fan" then.

Ah, Kings Quest. I beat VI once back in the day. There was this one puzzle where you were leaping from these ledges, and had to pick correct symbols to extend another ledge, I think. The stupid thing was you wouldn't know what symbols to press if you didn't have the physical handbook that came with the game. If you didn't have this book you were screwed.

I still really enjoyed the game, though.

Thanks for posting this, it really brings back the memories. I remember I had V on floppies and the hard drive on our computer didn't have enough space for a full install, so I actually played it off the floppies. Whenever you would go to another screen it would say "Insert Disk #" it got pretty tedious, but what a fun game. I got VI when my dad bought a multimedia upgrade kit (Cd-Rom,Sound Card, Speakers) for our computer. It was included in the bundle with a few other games. Me and a friend spent a long time going through the thing. I think we might of even cheated with a guide we pulled off a BBS to get through some of the obstacles.

Don't get me wrong, I love the older Kings Quests games but I can't image someone who's never played having fun using the tedious system of typing in every action you want to preform and using the keyboard to slowly walk around. Although this is a retro website, so I could be hugely mistaken.

Thanks for the feedback everybody!

Oh, the parser's a problem? I dunno, people don't seem to have a problem typing in 160 character messages with their thumbs, so I don't see how short subject-verb combinations would be a problem. Also, I think you can move your character with the mouse (if you really want to) in most Sierra games, and if he walks too slow there's a speed adjustment.

But yeah, I'd put V and VI on the top, above III and IV, those are really the only important ones. VII was a major departure, and not in a good way IMO, and like I said I and II were just scavenger hunts, boring. Let's not even mention the other one, OK?
