NES arcade control panel troubles

Post by everydayJOE »

I awhile ago I started on a NES arcade cabinet from the ground up. I started on the control panel and ran into problems. I tryed attaching 2 4 way joysticks and 8 pushbuttons that I bought from happ. But I could only get the down and the left to work on the joystick. The buttons, only the a. Could it be the gauge of wire I am using? I don't know the gauge of wire I am using so yeah. If I could get any help it would be wonderful!

How are you connecting the arcade components to the NES? Are you soldering to a NES controller PCB (printed circuit board)?

Most people use 18,22, or 28 gauge wires (also called AWG).

Why not use an Advantage?

Because the the advantage is a horrible controller, and I already have one anyways.

Dammit, I already moved this thread to a more appropriate location once. How did it end up in Whatever? If I find this thread anywhere but in Hacks and Mods or in Technical Help somebody's getting hurt.

Why not just mod it with arcade parts?

Depends on how much flexibility you need. Stranded wire is more flexible than solid copper. Ive used both, but on a big cab I go for what is cheaper. For your sake, use quick connects. Less soldering and it means when the cherry switch dies it is an easy swapout.

As for the Advantage. Why buy and gut an expensive joystick when you can pickup a clone controller for a couple bucks and the pcb is just as good, if not better suited for the circumstance? Sure you can find Advantages for $5 sometimes, but the average price is $10-15. You can buy a yobo controller or an NES controller for $3 most places. Simple math there. However I am unaware of the inner workings of the Advantage joystick. If it is a true arcade joystick, then it would be a worthwhile purchase if your soldering skill is not that great.
