Saturn Questions

Post by sonikjesus »

Hello, guys. First of all, I'm new here. I just found this site about a month ago to find information on the Saturn system I just got off ebay. I decided to get one because I always wanted one when I was little but my parents could not afford one. But now, since I work, I thought I might as well get one. Anyways, I got it to play Nights because I still remember playing the Nights demo at my cousin's house about 10 years ago. I also got it to play the Marvel fighting games made by Capcom.

So, I have a few questions. The games that I have acquired so far are X-Men: COTA and Marvel Super Heroes. Both are the Japanese versions. I also bought a Action Replay 4 in 1 from play-asia.com to be able to play them on my US Saturn. X-Men runs great. I could not believe how smooth and quick it was. It is almost on par with the animations from Marvel vs. Capcom 2. MSH, on the other hand is dreadfully slow. I could not believe that it was so slow. It's unplayable to me. It literally looks like it is in slow motion. I'm not kidding.I managed to make myself beat it once. It is not just the gameplay that is slow, everything is slow. The menus, the credits, and the loading times. When I beat it, the credits went on for about 3 more minutes after the ending song had finished because the credits move so slow. So my question is: is MSH supposed to be that slow?

Or, is it a compatability issue with my 4 in 1?I have read a bunch of things online about the 4 in 1 and all of them say MSH should run fine with the 4 in 1? I can't figure out what's wrong. Thanks and sorry for the long post.

Marvel Super Heroes is just a slow game. It is supposedly compatible witht he 1MB Ram cart (your 4 in 1 takes care of this) but I honestly can only tell a slight improvement. I'm not sure why this is when games like SF Alpha 2 are insane and intense with no ram cart.

There are tons of good 2D fighters for the system though that compete with the best of what's available today. Most of these utilize the 4MB cart (also covered by your 4 in 1). Vampire Saviour is simply AWESOME looking. Mavel vs. SF and XMen vs SF are great. Cyberbots will give you your Marvel Superheroes Capcom feel but not the slowdown. To me Street Fighter Alpha 3 on Saturn is the greatest fighting game of all time. It's arcade perfect with more features than the arcade. A lot easier to find and almost as good is Street Fighter Alpha 2. Waku Waku 7 is fun but has bad loading and slow down. Astra Superstars is fun for something different. There are lots of SNK fighting games too like King of Fighters and Samurai Spirits.

Damn it, I typed up this whole lLONG response and Opera crapped. Anyways, I doubt the 4-in-1 is the problem. The 4-in-1 is essential

Here's the gist of what I wrote.

1.) Mod Saturn to play backups
2.) Make sure you have the 3D Pad and the small digital pad for best gaming experience
3.) Join underground-gamer.com and get some Saturn torrents kickin'
4.) Test all the Saturn games you ever wanted to, this site can tell you most of the "must-play" games

If you like NiGHTS, try Christmas NiGHTS. It is graphically superior and has TONS of bonus features, but is only one level long. If playing originals (not backups) then go with the Japanese version - 100% English text, MUCH better packaging, cheaper and easier to find, and doesn't have the awful English voiceover during the little movie. Sure you don't get the story in English, but you ain't missin nuthin'.

If you like 3D fighters, the 3 most impressive to me are Streetfighter Zero 3, X-Men VS Streetfighter, and Vampire Savior. There are others, but these 3 are the obvious ones - Maximum "bling" +excellent gameplay.

The original post was much better than this but I don't have it in me to type it twice.

Thanks for the replies. I forgot to mention that I do already have the 3d controller (I got it new and boxed) and Christmas Nights. I got the US one though but I'll look out for the Japanese one. Right now, I'm concentrating on getting the Marvel fighters from Capcom though. Next, I'm going to pick up XM vs SF and MSH vs SF. I'll also get the American versions of X-Men:COTA and MSH just because. So I guess it is supposed to be that slow.

Anyways, I also have some questions about my 4 in 1. Is there a switch on the cart that I have to switch t enable the 1 RAM or the 4 RAM, or does the cart switch automatically as needed? Also, on the box art the cart has a port of some sort on top of it but the actual physical cart doesn't. What is that for and why doesn't mine have it?
