I thought so too at first, but I can assure you it isn't required. It's definitely not easy the first few times, but it is possible to do it without the powerup - when I completed it with the good ending, I fortunately managed to make that jump without a powerup in one go.

On that note, despite what many people say, powerups are not required to beat the last boss - I've managed to beat him without a single powerup. This might be because I've mastered the double jump and can do it everytime without fail.

My main issue with the game is the need for memorization. I don't find that appealing in any game. The water level particularly requires memorization - or just doing a shuriken throw everytime you jump.
The need for memorization and the fact that it was so slow put me off this game at first, but one day when I was tired and needed to stay awake, I popped in Revenge of Shinobi to keep me occupied, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Nonetheless I'm not sure I'd list it as a favourite.

Nice review, by the way.

pretty good review.

Not being able to shoot your shuriken in 8 directions can feel restrictive.

The one thing that I find most annoying is when you touch an enemy you automatically bounce back. This can lead to some very cheap deaths as you are inadvertently knocked back far enough just to fall into that bottomless pit.

A separate button for the closeup melee attack would've been very appreciated but the genesis pad at the time only had 3 buttons so it figures as much.

Sometimes you wish the screen were bigger so that you could see more of the level or at least be able to shift the screen to view more of it (like in super mario world) so that you don't accidentally jump to your death because you can't see where the platform below is.

Still in spite of all this...I'm quite impressed with the game so far. It's fun enough and so far the limitations aren't much of an issue most times.
