Any other fans out there? There are 4 versions of the game - Arcade, Saturn, PSX and Sega/Mega CD.
You basically fly around in a car that bares more than a passing resemblance to Centauri's in "The Last Starfighter". Except it shoots plasma bolts and doesn't do any intergalactic travel (that I know of). The game uses sprite scaling technology to give the illusion of flying. See Afterburner, Space Harrier and Outrun for examples.
I played the arcade version when my age was just entering the double digits. I never knew the name of the game until I stumbled upon Hardcore Gaming 101's write up. I quickly found the Saturn version on eBay and ordered it. It was just as fun as I had remembered it (if a bit easy). If you're a fan of Sega's "Super Scaler" games I highly recommend it. One of the few unique Saturn shmups that can be had for around $20.

Re: Night Striker
I personally cant stand games like this and never understood why panorama cotton etc had such a following. I do give this one credit for having a cool theme though.

So, I take it you aren't a fan of Star Fox, Panzer Dragoon, Rez, etc.?toredauei wrote:I personally cant stand games like this and never understood why panorama cotton etc had such a following. I do give this one credit for having a cool theme though.

Re: Night Striker
Nice one.
Also released on one of the 4 Taito Memories collections for PS2
I've played both ps and ss ports. Either is fine, yet I do wonder if the framerate is as high as the arcade or ps2 port

Re: Night Striker
to be fair- those aren't sprite based. I think he means games like after burner. They do play a little more clunky than their 3d rail shooter counterparts.the7k wrote:So, I take it you aren't a fan of Star Fox, Panzer Dragoon, Rez, etc.?toredauei wrote:I personally cant stand games like this and never understood why panorama cotton etc had such a following. I have a soft spot for these types of games. When someone says think of a video game that defines the term- i think of the after burner arcade every time.
Didn't know about night striker. Gonna have to check this out. Looks fun.

Yeah, man! Probably my favorite game of its type. I have the PS2 Taito Memories version. Multiple paths, hovering and shit. Now that's a fun Wednesday night if I've ever had one (I have).
My game-related blog.

Re: Night Striker
Very cool. I had no idea they finally released it with a Taito Memories pack.
Re: Night Striker
I was in fact referring to the sprite based rail shooters. Star Fox and Panzer Dragoon are two of my favorite games but I cant say that I've ever played reznickfil wrote:to be fair- those aren't sprite based. I think he means games like after burner.
