[SS]Alt. source to power the modchip?(over-soldered PSU PIN)

Post by coel009 »

(i had an account here but im unable to get my password mailed , anyway...)

I have a friend who has a modded saturn , but unfortunately his modchip isn't working anymore(after a little "accident" with his pet ... :P ) , he has bought another , and asked me to install it since he couldn't find the other guy to install it , but i think that there's a huge issue.

The guy who did the installation put too much solder on the 2nd pin , and no matter how hard i try its nearly impossible(without burning the PSU) to remove the solder , create a new joint and then connect the power wire.

I would like to know if there's a secondary power source that we can use or it needs a new PSU.

Any help is much appreciated.

I'm not sure how that's a problem. As long as you're getting power, you should be able to still solder to it. You can get a multi meter and put a probe on that over-soldered pin and the other probe on some ground. If you're getting 5v, you're good to go.

Sorry , i just know the basic stuff so i can simply install a modchip :? , that's why i asked here to prevent burning a whole thing that i don't even own :P .

I don't have a multi meter , but i guess i can always put my finger there  ...joking of course!

I guess in the end , the only way is to install the modchip on-top of that ugly soldered iron and i hope that it won;t burn the modchip or something. I'll have to ask my friend first of course...

If you're facing the front of your Saturn, the power supply connector is to the left and the CD drive cable is to the right. Typically you would put your mod chip to the right, connect the 21-pin drive cable to the board from the drive and then the cable from the board to the Saturn.

You would have a wire (usually not supplied) which one end is soldered to the mod board and the other end to the power pin on the power supply connector.

Sorry for replying late  , but yesterday i had the chance to pass by my friend's house , and i actually did it.

It was quite hard to do it because the iron was burned and stuck really deep into the 2nd pin , and what i did was to cut a bit of the plastic that's around the pin , then carefully i removed some iron from there that was in quite good condition(on top it was all BLACK!!!) , and i managed to place some clean solder , and finally i soldered the wire , then i did the usual stuff( a+b bridge) and we tested DEEP FEAR which worked on first run.

It was a bad experience for a person that only knows the basic stuff about soldering  ...

Glad you got it working but I don't think it was necessary to remove the old solder. I would have put the wire on top of the solder and pressed the soldering iron to the top of the wire. Wait for the solder to melt and then pull the soldering iron away.

You're probably right( again :D ) , but i tried it and i couldn't melt the existing solder , instead a weird smell of burned plastic came out , and i stopped immediately! The solder was black!

And like i said , i'm no expert at all...
I have modified my saturn(s) in the past , but i've never seen anything like this before and the console wasn't mine , so i had to be careful.

Sounds like you did the right thing. I guess the original solderer was sloppy and melted plastic around the pin. Uggh.
