The hardest part of learning any language is using it constantly. If you have people fluent available all the time you can't help but learn. J-RPG's as a hobby wouldn't hurt your kanji or kana memorization that is for sure.
I had Japanese grammar and kana going really well up until 2 years ago. Not like I had a huge vocabulary or could ready many Kanji but I was able to stumble though many conversations. Then I stopped going to Japan and had very little practice here at home. The grammar and inflection I learned are all still up there, but I can't talk about much more than a train ticket.
Thanks to Bernie Stolar, I'm taking up Japanese in College!!

I remember when I was little and my older brother Danny used to say he was going to learn Japanese. I told him he would fail miserably. So he's leaned some Spanish instead, but then he could never shut up about it. I don't know what it is about people in foreign language classes, they always seem like they think that being able to say, "I missed the train" in some Euro-speak is more impressive than saying it in English. Whatever.
That being said, I'm taking French III next year!
