How could both of my Dreamcasts stop working? Same problem..

Post by molotovwars »

So shit all I wanted to do today was play Shenmue II. First the modded xbox I have doesn't work and then both of my Dreamcasts seem to have crapped out...sort of.

So I plug them in, and then turn on and the Dreamcast logo loads up and I get to the screen to input the date and time. No matter which of the 12 controllers I plug in, I can't move anything on the screen or change the date/time. Both of my dreamcasts have the identical problem.

Am I just doing something wrong here? I could understand one not working, but both? Could it be the controller port? If it makes a difference I have been storing them vertically in a storage box, but they have been under good care and are dust free and very clean consoles.

The F1 resister has popped, google is your friend here. It's an easy fix. Usually caused from using 3rd party controllers.

The only way to deactivate the ray beam and fight back the vampire alien threat is with a complicated series of foot patterns on the device's control board that looks remarkably like a DDR pad. Well shit I did plug a Sega Sports controller into both of them that I had never used before. Would that be the culprit? Would I know if the F1 resistor popped when I plugged it in. Its just that they've both been in storage and not getting any use, I was very surprised and now I guess I won't be using the Sega Sports controller.

Thank you for the link, but the guide that person linked to didn't work.

Yeah I noticed after I sent it that his link was gone.I didn't have enough time to check it properly since I'm at work.Sorry mate.

But it is a fairly simple fix. This guy only wrapped a piece of wire around the blown resister to complete the circuit, erm,not sure if I can recommend that though.

As far as if your Sega sports controller did, It could well be.If you've never used the controller before and now both of your systems are toast it sounds right to me.

Man that shit just ruined my day and now I won't be able to fix it for awhile since I'm not too skilled with soldering and my step-dad is out of town for the next 2 weeks. I will probably follow this guide though:

Thank you, this is exactly what I needed. It was hard to follow the details or understand the language in other fixes I found online and this did it for me. Its also good to know that even if I have problems with the quick fix I can always just replace the resistor.

Dreamcast #1 up and running, now for the second one.

EDIT: And Dreamcast #2 working.
