Super Metroid can be hard in places, but it really is nothing compared to the original. The original is harder. It's more confusing and less forgiving.

When I first started playing Super Metroid, I got stuck in Maridia for about 6 hours. 30 minutes after finally getting through to the other side, I found out that there was such thing as the gravity suit...

Hard or easy?
Are you asking if its hard or easy now, or then?
Back in the day I sped through the first one on the NES, but recently (last week) I started playing it again and it seems so much harder. The same but more extreme was Super Metroid. Back in the day it was challenging, tried it again a couple years ago and it was Super Frustrating.
It seems that every game I come back to is a lot harder than I remember. This is why I love retro gaming - the replay value becomes refreshed and the challenge is upped because of personal expectations.

This on the Nintendo 64 would have been the greatest thing ever. Earthbound 64 and NTSC-U editions of Animal Crossing and Sin & Punishment would have propelled it to legendary status. Damn, now you have me dreaming of what could have been. I own a Sega CD, Sega Saturn, and Sega Dreamcast, so I already have more than enough of that sort of dreaming to work with.

Anyway, I personally love the Metroid series; some of the most rewarding gameplay ever. I find it far and beyond a better series than Mario has proven to be. The Legend of Zelda only surpassed it in recent years (LoZ: Wind Waker > Metroid Prime IMO). I played through Super Metroid with a friend of mine who would tell me what to do when I asked him (and occasionally when I didn't ask him, but was just on the cusp of doing so. I was shocked by his patience). Unfortunately, like every other Nintendo game, I just feel that the story of the game is terribly lacking in comparison to all the other incredible aspects of the game. I mean, MEMORABLE, sure! But good? No, I wouldn't say so. Nintendo has created gaming's most memorable franchises with Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, StarFox, Pokemon (actually, that's GameFreak, but whatever), Kirby (actually, that's HAL, but whatever), Donkey Kong (actually, that's RARE, but whatever), Earthbound (HAL again), F-Zero (My favorite edition was made by Sega), and Kid Icarus (poor, neglected Kid Icarus), and while all of those have unforgettable gameplay, they have absolutely no meaning; the stories always feel completely tacked on to give gamers some inkling of closure. I know that's not the main purpose of video GAMES, but I wish they, as gaming's prodigal son, would at least TRY and propel video games into gaining some legitimacy as an actual medium of art in much such the ways of Rez, Shadow of the Colossus, and so forth.

Huh? But yeah, the Ghost Ship thing didn't make any damn sense.

This.
Metroid NES absolutely raped me as a kid but I was so determined to beat that game. I stuck at it for months, had countless passwords written down and rooms drawn. I dont actually know if I beat it as a kid, but I know I was in the grey area right before mother brain. I remember the metroids pissing me off a lot.

Metroid was kind of a survival horror game to me. It really did scare me at age 5-6. You do a lot of running away in that game. Everytime you found some secret passthrough wall or tunnel it was a total thrill.

Agree with you full there, Mozgus. The music was also really good at creeping you out. I remember any time I'd make it down to Ridley's Hideout I knew I was not supposed to be there, since the music told me so.

Of course, if you actually know what you're doing you realize that the optimal paths to the bosses are actually very straightforward. It's kind of funny, but most of the stuff that gets you lost is a trek for extra missile expansions which are pretty much unneeded, since the bosses give you a ton.

I split the art discussion off into a separate thread. See Whatever for details.

A secret is when things are well hidden in a room and you just can't find it.

I dont care what any one thinks, that game is really tough it is almost impossible to complete alone speaking for myself. Videogames are supposed to be fun and entertainment not punishing and frustrating , that what makes work, work.

I agree a certain difficulty has to be maintained to make it worth while playing and get satisfaction for completion, but it should be no where near punishing and frustrating.

I like the idea that every time you play you might find something new, but for me I would go through a whole game to get 90% same experience and then 10% new stuff. I rather just play another game. I think games should not have replay value unless it is co-op or has extra levels. And hence they should be lower in price. What is the use of playing OoT 5 times a year? I rather play something else really

It just depends what kind of genre you usually play, yes Super Metroid may be a bit difficult depending on if you have ever played any of the others or not, or if you only play sports games, etc. Myself however, being a huge Metroid fan (Sadly, Super Metroid was the last Metroid game I played after beating every single one in the franchise.) I found it to be a very rewarding experience.

P.S. I vaguely remember playing a demo of it at a store as a kid, so technically I just forgot about it until a few years ago :S
