You should check out Raine. It will emulate most of the best arcade shmups you'll want to play. Better than MAME in my experience. The romset is a lot smaller than MAME too, so it's easier to manage.
A short list of favorites:
Dodonpachi
Giga Wing
Mars Matrix
Progear
1941
Gunbird
Darius Gaiden
Zero Wing
It's also great for vs. fighters, and beat em ups. And of course classics like Donkey Kong and PacMan. Honestly, I barely have any reason to use MAME at all anymore. Raine emulates far fewer games, but the signal to noise ratio is much, much higher.

I know its a long way away but does anyone have an estimate as to when the current cave shmups would possibly be available to play on mame? is there a general amount of years things like this take from arcade release to being emulated?

I agree the X-Arcade is mediocre at best,If you want the real parts get Sanwa or Happ parts,it might be more money but its worth it.My cabinet is going be using Sanwa sticks with Happ buttons,IMO Happ sticks are not responsive as Sanwa sticks but I do like the way Happ buttons feel.crux wrote:As an aside, I get tired of seeing X-Arcades recommended (aside from their trackball - they're the only ones that make a complete trackball controller for PC). The cases are very solid and durable, but the buttons and sticks are knock-offs, yet the package is sold for a premium price tag. It goes to show what good marketing can do for a product.
Systems: Sega Dreamcast(x2), Sega Genesis(x2), Sega Saturn, Sega CD, Genmobile (portable Genesis), FC Twin, PSX, PS2(x2), GBA, SP, Xbox 360, N64, Showcase Arcade

If you're just starting out in the 2D shooter genre I'd go with the following:
Gradius III
Image Fight
Truxton 2
R-Type 2
Gunbird 2
Last Resort
Pulstar
After you've broken a gamepad or twelve consider checking these out:
Battle Bakraid
Darius Gaiden
Metal Black
Progear No Arashi
EcoFighters
Forgotten Worlds

Gunbird 2

Pick something easy first like the 194X series.
