I actually think that the hardest thing about Zelda is figuring out which dungeon is next!

If you want an experience, try getting to Ganon without a sword. I can do it on the first quest, second quest I got the first three triforce pieces and gave up for the same reason Popo posted. Those rooms are hard enough stock, but no sword they are damn near impossible. I have only heard of people getting to Ganon on the second quest without a sword.

As a kid I was obsessed with this game. Hell, I was that dorky kid who dressed up as Link for Halloween. So, as you would expect, I played through and finished the game multiple times.

After a recent attempt to replay the game, I found that I simply couldn't put myself through it. The original Zelda has the same problems that so many other NES games did back in the day - namely, the archaic puzzles with little or no direction combined with a brutal difficulty level. In fact, with games like this, its sequel, Metroid, and Castlevania 2, etc. it is simply amazing that we gamers kept going back to see what kind of punishment the game developers were going to put us through next.

Regardless, Link to the Past trumps this game in just about every aspect...

My wife still plays this game obsessively, even more than LttP by a broad margin. I sometimes go back to it, too. Incredibly fun game.

I wouldn't say that it is hard, just tedious. I love this game because there are no hints as to what is next. Even the hint giving old man is very vague. There is a lot of just random exploring and stumbling on the next step. Where as in the newer games (which I also love) every person you talk to is telling you where to go next. And I would say the enemies have no real tactic like the newer games. Just attack and attack again until the hordes are defeated. Awesome.

I don't really mind the mental challenge, like finding where to go next. It is the onslaught of enemies that kills me (literally).

As I've said, roomfulls of Blue Darknuts are one of the evilest creations of the NES era. At least in Ninja Gaiden you could memorize the location of every mid-jump bat.
