One Of Japan's Ugly Sides (56K Warning)

Post by hashiriya1 »

Ah, Japan wouldn't be complete without its cars, anime, toys, weird game shows, bukkake, and of course its right-wing groups. You don't really hear much about them if you're outside of Japan, but once you get here they are hard to ignore. Just something from Japan's dark side that your tourguides, travel agents, or Japanese girlfriends won't mention.

Some call them the "KKK of Japan". I think that title is a little overboard. These guys, called the "uyoku" are the right-wing groups trying to bring back the Japan of the past. As you may know, Japan has no military (just a small self-defense force). They want Japan to bring back its military program and start flexing their muscle around Asia...like they did back in the 30s when they killed hundreds of thousands of Chinese, Korean, Filipino, and other Asian races.

Their message is simple; "Rid Japan of ALL foreign influences". No imported cars, no foreign companies, no foreign PEOPLE, no nothing. There are difference factions each with a specific cause. One thing they ALL have in common is they think the emperor of Japan is a divine being and should be respected as such. So there is a faction who have accepted the reality that America is Japan's "bodyguard" and they praise America. If America is protecting Japan, that means they are protecting the emperor, too. If North Korea or China attacks, America will be the first line of defense. Japan is North Korea's prime target for an assault. While the uyoku don't take kindly to foreigners, most of their hate is directed towards Chinese and Koreans.

Their destination is the Yasukuni Shrine. Yasukuni is Japan's equivalent to the Arlington National Cemetery. This is where all of Japan's soldiers are enshrined. Even the class-A war criminal, Hideki Tojo. Yasukuni has a large collection of Japan's weapons of war. From samurai swords from hundreds of years ago, to cannons used to attack Nanking. Whenever a Japanese polictician visits this shrine, China and Korea shit up a storm. Japan's military is viewed by China and Korea the way the Jewish view the Nazis. Imagine if the current chancellor of Germany visited a memorial dedicated to Nazi soldiers and Hitler. That's how bad it is.

Last August I knew they were going to have another Tokyo invasion, so I drove down there to get in the thick of it. Some foreign tourists who didn't know what was going on were harassed. They were taking pictures and the uyoku members were about ready to break their cameras. They were the typical anime geek types who come to Japan so they can brag to their anime cliques back home, so I was kinda hoping they would get theirs. Those are the types who think Japan is Disneyland or something. It's not. FAR from it.You Racketboy members who live in Japan know what I am talking about.

Now, when I got inside they assumed I was Japanese and left me alone...which is how I was able to take pictures from the inside.

The governor of Tokyo (Tokyo is technically a state, not a city) knows when these guys are coming around, but he won't really do anything to stop them. He's had relationships with them in the past. The Tokyo governor is pretty open about his bigotry. He's done public speeches with no tact whatsoever. He mostly puts down North and South Koreans...and if he has time, the Chinese as well.

They come from all over Japan by the busload with patriotic slogans
painted all over their vehicles and proganda blaring from those huge speakers.
They driver around like that and it's really annoying.

The Shrine is never this crowded. Only when the Uyoku roll around.

The bald guy is actually a well-known Uyoku leader. I've seen him on TV
a few times. He's like some well-educated scholar who went to one of Japan's
top schools. He's wasting his smarts on ignorance, I'd say!

Here's a pic of him I stole from his site:

Here's his party's site.

The Uyoku are financed mostly by the Yakuza, and that's them watching from the sidelines.

Police directing them to go away. That blockade on the right was only
opened for non uyoku cars.

OK, now that is just funny.

Holy cow... looks like a bigger pain in the butt than Fred Phelps, crammed into less space.

Thanks for sharing these photos and your observations. They're very enlightening. I can understand the amount of time/work it takes to share this with everyone. I enjoy learning/knowing more about other countries/cultures.

Another forum that I check out from time to time (assemblergames), they have a whole sub-forum devoted to Japan. Fascinating stuff.

In my industry (software development), I commonly work with folks from India. I enjoy chatting with them to know more what the country is like and in what ways the US is different.

Ah Japan, just as crazy as America, but better at hiding it from the rest of the world.

That's not cool. Kinda an elitist attitude to have.

It makes me sad to people acting that way.

These guys always seem to be out during the Obon period during August. I understood what they were all about immediately when I wandered into their caravan near Shinjuku Station. No interest in that kind of trouble so I bailed quick.

Kinda mean to the otaku there. Tourists are tourists.

Can't blame them for wanting to put their own country's interests first, although if it involves hassling tourists and the resumption of military force against other countries that is going far too far in my opinion.

Wow. Great pics. Thanks for the glimpse into Japan. Never knew of this movement whatsoever. Another reminder that ignorance knows no race or boundary.
