I also have the Z-64 backup unit. They are hard to come by now and out of all of the video game items in my collection if this one broke I'd be devistated with out it. It really is one of my favorites. Here is some info available on the web about it. http://www.softidea.com/Z64/ I bought mine from Ebay many years ago so they do pop up on rare occasions.

I was thinking about the Z64 device and how cool it is, but it has limitations in that it uses old zip disks which, nowadays, the storage space is very limited.

I'm assuming that it uses standard IDE cables, so wouldn't it be possible to swap the drive out for a CD-Rom or even a DVD-Rom drive instead? I know it wouldn't physically fit inside the plastic enclosure, but it would definetely be cool to have one single DVD disc which has almost the entire N64 collection at your fingertips.

Just a thought for those very few people who actually own this device

Absolutely! However, if I am not mistaken, there could be a size mismatch in the system bios which is stored on the bios chip on the main board of the device, which is currently looking for a ZIP100. Since ZIP250 and other types of drives with similar form factor are actually inexpensive (like the Iomega IDE drives which have plug-in carts that are 2 or more GB each!), I would love to try it - and then, if all fails, just put the original drive back in....

I will try this in the next couple of weeks and post my findings here! I am just a little "scared" of any damage happening to my device, since they are almost impossible to find nowadays - but I'll be careful! LOL....

If would be SOOOOO cool to access the IDE controller and attached a larger Hard Disk Drive, and store ALL of my 400+ game images on there for immediate access! However, using the built-in LED screen to navigate all of those game titles would take forever.... Hmm.....

I will be thinking this one through! FUN - a new project! LOL - thanks for the great idea!!!

I'm suprised you guys haven't heard of the z64 before. It was one of the most often used N64 pirating devices. You able to play the 64mb carts like RE2 or conker's bfd on there? Don't know too much on the zip disks you were talking bout. Wasn't there a doctor backup or something like that for the 64 as well?
