Will you ever have collected enough?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

space is my only concern, i will always love and collect games, there will always be something i did not know about and become interested in and seek to find, finding the room for it is the only problem

I have a list of games I want hard copies of. Once that list is complete, I will make a list for the most recent generation of consoles given the status of retro. Its starting with the PS1 generation going up. (I'm only collecting my absolute favorite games for SNES, NES, and the Genesis.)

As I collect good games from these retro generations, I randomly select a game, play it, completely beat it, repeat process.

EDIT: I guess its not really random. Its more of the game I feel like playing at that moment in time.
Systems: SNES, PS1, GBA SP, Gamecube, DS Lite, Wii, PS3 (Fully Backwards Compatible), Dreamcast, Nintendo 64, Sega Genesis, a Sega CD, and a Sega Saturn.

I go through cycles, like after college and when I first got married I was working 12-14 hr days and we had a little apartment, so everything was packed away besides the current gen systems. Once we got our house and I finished the basment in that house I pulled out all the old games and starting adding to the collection. There was a comic book store down the street from us that always had a good selection of retro titles.

Then one day a buddy sent me a link to a street fighter 2 machine on craigslist and my focus shifted to fixing up and collecting arcade machines instead of console games. Well, now I've sold all but two machines and the classic consoles are back in storage cause we moved into a bigger house and I have another basement to finish. I even have been going through and seperating some of the systems/games I really don't think I need/want to sell. Although I will say my collecting picked up a bit when I found this website. Reading through the hidden gems and the forums made me stop back by that store by my old house, it had be me looking on ebay for things, stopping at goodwills while traveling. Now, I'm back to being focused on finishing the new game room and my wife's vegetable garden too, I guess...

The thing is with having a large collection you get so many hours of gameplay, I have a collection on the smaller size compared to some of you guys. I've got about 120-150 games probably and right now I'm in a little break from collecting just so can really spend some time playing and beating these games and its going to take me a long time to even put a dent in my collection as I beat 2-3 games a month. I'll stop collecting when there are no other video games out there that I want to play and haven't beaten and I don't think that is ever going to happen.
Systems Owned: SNES, N64, Dreamcast, Xbox 360, PS2, DS, Sega Genisis+32x+CD, Saturn, PSP

I don't think I'll ever stop collecting games, but I've often contemplate whether I'll expand beyond this current generation. I think I would have much more fun exploring the past and building big collections for the consoles I already own from now on.

Ha ... Glad I'm not the only one. I started off gaming when I was young (NES) and skipped two gens chasing girls for a while. When I finally caught one I got my first credit card and bought a N64 and PSOne on the sameday. And have been collecting since. But one day I was looking around the classifieds and say a SF2 for sale $100. Offered a N64 trade and drove it home. Then came 16 other arcades, table tops, and pinballs which came in front of my console collection for a while.

When I got bored playing in the garage by myself I sold my whole collection and started a classic car collection to fill in the space. And it seems my car collection needed some upgrades lately so my console gaming has suffered a little. But that also has to do with that I am down to about 26 CD ROM games (present gen excluded) and about less then a 100 cart games left on my entire list. I'm actually kind of sad now that my collection is almost done.

I myself also weep for the future with DRM games coming to be the norm. Nothing is better then coming home from a hard days work and pulling the car into the driveway and seeing my toys. And sitting down on the couch and seeing more of my toys.

I reached my limit a couple of times and realized I only ever play the Saturn, Genesis, and DOS games. So those are what I kept.

It goes in waves for me. I will always buy a new Nintendo system, stupid Zelda, but my desire for most modern games is fairly low, so that should leave more open money for retro right? Well my first love, boardgames, keeps peeking its head up. Between boardgames and minis, well my money and space is fairly full.

I have culled the boardgame collection to just a few with memories attached and my most played, but that is still about 75 titles, and since I like wargames it is alot of space. I made the decision long ago to only sell minis to people I know will take care of them. I am by no means a good painter, but I am not going to sell an out of print pewter or lead figure to someone who is going to use it once and toss it in a box without painting it. Why last weekend I spent $30 on 96 plastic minis - half lizard people...

I dont think my collection is going to grow terribly much bigger than it is now. I will probably sell the SMS and TG16 and finish buying the NES and SNES games from my childhood (either that I played or wanted to play). To be honest, emulation has really made it hard for me to justify the prices of some of the games.

Right now I am focusing on finishing games I have and trimming down my collection for the games I will never play. I just got a Wii, so I am making the commitment to beat each game I buy for it. I finished Donkey Kong Jungle Beat today and will move on to playing Shenmue II on the Xbox (never quite finished it on the Dreamcast, don't remember why). Occasionally I'll go back to Donkey Kong Jungle Beat and Klonoa and work towards 100%ing them, but for now the main story is complete.

I still look for new titles to buy, but I also periodically look through my collection and am taking out stuff that I won't play. I looked over my PS2 games and found 5 titles I would never play, swapped out the cases to make sure I kept the good cases, and brought them to my local game store.

Right now I've got maybe 50 PS2 games, 25 Gamecube, 20 Xbox, 100+ Genesis games (maybe 60 something are CIB), 70+ Dreamcast Games, 30 PSX games, 5 SNES Games, 15 NES Games, 25 N64 games, and then not much for Sega CD, Saturn, and 32x. With the exception of the Dreamcast and Genesis collections I am trying to keep all the others to games that I will actually play. No point in having Kung Fu on the NES, because if I take time to play a game on the NES I'd rather have it be Zelda, or maybe Bionic Commando, a game I picked up but haven't tried yet.

So for right now, I might have enough. I certainly have enough to play, but I still keep my eyes out.
