Carrying an old entertainment device and something for work are two very different things. But this is me getting way off topic.

Even the old MobilePro's do what the new netbooks are. Sure not as pretty or effieciently. But they generally get better battery life and for regular internet usage and word are great. Only problem is its running windows ce and not a full blown version, meaning for dos you have to get an emulator, and regular windows applications wont run.

I think it is mainly due to the low prices. Asus pulled it off rather well I think. People probably got fed up with carrying a larger laptop around when they realize that on travels they tend to just check the net (most of these netbooks don't have DVD players, but I guess savvy users can rip the DVD to watch it there anyway) and thus it's better to travel with something small, light and cheap than something powerful, heavier and expensive (that may get lost, stolen or damaged?).

I used to see several small laptops, but I only got interested in one when the prices were rather lower than for "real" laptops.
