Star Ocean DeJap Questions...

Post by Ziggy »

First off, version 1.0 is the latest, right? I read (I know its years old by now) on the DeJap website that 1.0 was released and 2.0 would be released eventually. I couldn't find a clear answer (I'm told my google fu is poor) but even though 1.0 wasn't intended to be the final release, is it DeJap's final release? I understand that the DeJap team doesn't exist any more.

Any way, the DeJap 1.0 patch is the best patch out there for Star Ocean, right? There is nothing more complete than that? I have "DeJap 2003" on the title screen.

My main question though... I started playing the game and got up to one of those parts where it asks you "Do you want to .... ?" and than you get a "Yes" and "No" to select. The thing is, "yes" and "no" where in Japanese. Is this the way it's suppose to be in the 1.0 patch? I played some more and got another "yes" or "no" deal, and it was again in Japanese (so I know it wasn't those mushrooms I ate earlier... joking).

I'm just confused because on the DeJap website it says that the text is 100% finished. I found through my google fu that the subtitles during the opening scene are still in Japanese in the 1.0 patch. Is the "yes" and "no" option in Japanese in the 1.0 patch as well?

Thanks.

As I recall, the Yes/No is actually two images. So you need to have an image pack that should have come with the translation patch. I think that image pack would also cover the opening subs (though it's been ages since I've played the rom).

Hmm, that makes sense. Although I can't find any graphic patches for the game, only the English translation patch. As far as the term "graphics patch" goes, this is taken from the DeJap Star Ocean page:
Star Ocean's graphics are hardware compressed within the rom and decompressed via a custom addon hardware chip. zsKnight, The Dumper and Dark Force have worked hard to get the graphics extracted from the real rom so that the game could be playable on SNES emulators. zsKnight made ZSNES load them initially, since then Snes9x and other emulators also now support loading the graphics from external files. Star Ocean emulation is finally a reality (even if it is cheating).

Recently, the S-DD1 decompression algorithm was completely reverse engineered by some really clever people: Andreas Naive and The Dumper. Pretty soon these "troublesome" graphics pack files will no longer be needed to play Star Ocean.

So I'm assuming there is no fix for this since it's no longer being worked on?

Wasn't Star Ocean recently translated and remade on the PSP? There's always that option. I'd have more to say, but I haven't messed with the SNES patch since the very day it was released, and I just never got around to actually playing it.

Yeah, Star Ocean and The Second Story were both remade on the PSP. But I'm making Star Ocean SNES repros so I just want to make sure I'm using the best version ROM possible. I actually have them for PSP, but I'd much rather play a game on a console versus a hand held. That and the fact that I'm a SNES lover.

Play the Dejap release, I played it from start to finish with no issues.

I just took a look at my rom directory, and I do have a couple of sub folders for graphics. One is Star Ocean and the other is Street Fighter Alpha 2. The folders consist of a dat and an idx file. I'm not really sure if you can use those plus the rom to do a cart repro. You might want to ask around the romhacking.net forums to see if anyone knows of a one-rom solution that can be burned to eeprom for repro purposes.

My guess is that you'd have to hack the ROM and change the images, because as stated DeJap isn't working on it any longer. If you have hacking experience it'd probably be easy, just a quick patch up of the images.

^ Well since the graphics are decompressed via the S-DD1 chip, even a super hacker would have a hard time with it.

I have the DeJap release, that's what I'm using. It has "DeJap 2003" on the title screen. Was the "yes" and "no" option in yours in English?

I think I remember them being in japanese still. It was like 3 years ago when I played it.
