Or you could just not read reviews. Reviews (whether movies, video games, whatever) are usually arbitrary and pointless. All they do is poison you.
I know video games are expensive now a days and people are more cautious to invest, but I would rely on word of mouth more... or just rent the game if you're mildly interested. IGN isn't the all seeing all knowing be all of end all. I would take reviews with a grain of salt, move on from there, and ignore inconsistencies.
I don't think I've read a review in a while... it just used to ruin my experience. Especially for movies. It makes you go in with pre-conceived notions. Sometimes you won't even try a game and maybe miss-out on something.
What does a score between 1-10 even mean? It's pretty trivial. A 7 could mean one thing to one person, and something else to another... that actually bugs me the most. Scores or grades. Extremely meaningless. And most people scroll down to the bottom and look at those and don't even read the review, and make their decision from there.

I use reviews for a couple of things. I use the score to tell if a game is getting mixed scores (tells me it's niche) or similar scores. And I'll scan for keywords, like slowdown, better than the first, or dogshit.

When I was growing up reading EGM, I noticed that Mario games only got better and better reviews. Same with fighting games like Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Killer Instinct, etc. Yikes, I just dated myself.

I use sites like metacritic so i can get a lot of opinions on a game that i may want to buy. You have to realize most reviewers will go with whatever trend is occurring for that games review so they avoid conflict and to keep their readers satisfied, If you have the option download the demo and try it for yourself and if you don't have that option ask someone who you knows owns it what they thought of it.

Man, I really miss EGM. I hate GamePro. They're utter garbage in my opinion. Everything feels so half-assed! Besides, where am I gonna get my "Hsu and Chan" and "Rest of the Crap"? Those were hilarious! All I get now is eight pages of screenshots with boring, unclever captions, old news, and 30-page previews on another Halo, God of War, or Call of Duty game. It's so boring! I regret subscribing to the magazine now.
But you know what magazing I REALLY miss? Next-Gen! Now, THAT was a great magazine! Totally fair reviews, great coverage, and well-written and researched articles. Why do the people always have to declare the shittiest contestants the winners in the world of business? Fuck Capitalism!

ok you have made your death wish. Where do you live? We have a score to settle. Weapon of choice : chainsaw
(though seriously sonic 3 does suck but S&K is the best imo.)
Truly game reviews suck for having a score below. Imo there should be no number, just the text. If the review is well written, and not ign garbage, then just the text, should be enough to convince you if the game is worth it or not.
Imo gametrailers reviews are the best, just because you get a video playing on the backround of the review, which helps a lot. The second I saw inFamous I fell in love with it.

I think that what this topic is really getting at is how utterly useless the 1 to 10 rating scale is. It just doesn't make sense to review something that way, especially a video game, which, depending on the title, some people will enjoy the heck out of it and others will struggle to maintain interest. I think all reviews on gaming sites should get rid of the number system and replace it with one or two sentences highlighting the gist of the game's weak points and strong points, maybe an explanation of the game's context (eg. shoot em' up 2 is a sequel to shoot em' up 1), and an awareness of who will enjoy it and who won't.
