Weird issue with my CRT SDTV...

Post by Flak Beard »

All of a sudden, within the first few minutes of turning it on the picture will fill with a green tint. This usually lasts about two to ten seconds or so, and then the picture instantly goes back to normal. After that, it won't happen again until I turn it back on after being off for a half a day or so.

Right now, it's not that big an issue because it doesn't last long. Although, I worry the thing is on the fritz. Anyone else have this happen to them or know why it would do this? Is the tube on the way out?

I'd suspect that your CRT is going to start dying on you. It sounds like the red and blue electron guns are taking longer to kick in than the green one.

Well guys, by coincidence I lucked out! I went to a friend's over the weekend and he had two CRTs sitting in his kitchen. I asked him why and he said he was going to get rid of them because he upgraded to HD in both of his rooms. I told him about the issue I was having and he unloaded a 32" Panasonic SDTV on me no charge.

So far it works great and it's way bigger than what I was using for my retro systems. :D

The good thing about CRT's is that there are a lot of vintage TV collectors out there that are insane about having new parts custom manufactured and repairing sets that are 30+ years old, so there's always a pretty good chance to repair any aging set but it's all a matter of the effort you want to put into it.
