The main reason people like it? It's not the same 'ol thing.
Treasure took some risks and mixed up the formula a bit.

It's certainly not without flaws. In fact I could go on all day about the various balance issues(Nicole breaks the game) and problems with the game's design without even so much as mentioning the multiplayer. On the other hand it's pure chaos and features no shortage of dumb fun.

Course I wouldn't dare pay the prices it goes for these days.

And in a world where things get more conventional daily, that's worth its weight in gold (pun unintended).

I won't go through a lengthy explanation but instead just state my opinion: It's my favorite game of all time.

I've devoted as much time to GH as just about any game and I could still play it endlessly. I just find it to be a massively entertaining and playable game. I love the artwork, the characters, the crazy aspects of the game and how easy it is to pick up and play. The hybrid beat-em-up rpg elements fit my tastes perfectly. The story doesn't make a lot of sense but it gives branching options that I actually enjoy.

Of course, a few points should be considered when weighing my opinion:

1. I love games that become chaotic melees.
2. I love Treasure games.
3. I'm not very good at traditional fighting games.
4. I love Goblins and Godats.

In any event this game is "that good" and more (to me). I would gladly pay whatever the current going price for it is.

Mmm, yes I agree. I feel that changing the formula made the game lose some shooter "charm". I think it's a must play for anyone who has played some shumps but I would not recommend it to a newbie at all.

I liked this game. The 6-player multiplayer was pretty cool. I believe that every system has a game that capitalizes on a game's strengths so much that it couldn't be done on another system. I think Guardian Heroes is that game for the Saturn. it is a very system resource-demanding 2D game, and the Saturn can handle it quite well. The PS1 could certainly not do it, and the Nintendo 64 would require too many tricky coding workarounds for it to work. I think the reason this game is popular is because it fits the Saturn's purpose of 2D gaming very well.
