I just discovered the Gamecube.

Post by ThatCrazyGu »

Honestly, after some serious wheeltime with the Gamecube in the past 2 weeks (probably about 20 hours combined) I honestly can't see why the hardcore PS2 and Xbox fanboys can even have the right to remotely bash it. To be frank, I'm probably guilty of making fun of the 'cube a little bit (or a lot) but most of the naysayers probably haven't used one very long, much less owned one. I read on here that Gamestop was selling BNIB ones for 30 bones so I pluncked down a Benjy and Bought a brand new platinum gamecube, Twilight Princess, Wind waker, Pikmin, Timesplitters 2, Resident Evil 4, Eternal Darkness, Both metroid primes, Luigi's mansion, and Viewtiful Joe. It's the best 100 dollars I have ever spent on video games. Honestly, I own a 360 and I think I've turned it on all of once to see who was on and then just turned it off to play more Wind Waker. I've owned every other last-gen console and the only one I still own is the Dreamcast, but I think the Gamecube is worthwhile enough to continue its position in my collection. My only minor gripe is I've had to rearrange all the systems on my shelf in order for the Gamecube to sit on it properly due to its height, but I don't think I've become this encapsulated in a console since I bought my PS1. This is my first new Nintendo console (I had a SNES) but I'm so impressed by this peice of hardware that I'm kind of motivated to go out and buy a Wii. Or maybe not.

Yeah, the Gamecube definitely had its share of awesome games.
Some other awesome titles were Super Mario Sunshine (yeah, not as good as SM64 or SMG, but it'll do), Pikmin 2 (even better than the first, and one of my favorite games ever), and Paper Mario: Thousand year door (kinda easy but totally worth playing if you liked the first).

I also enjoyed SSBM, but it's outdated now, and Sonic Adventure 2 Battle (thank goodness you can skip the cutscenes).

The gamecube's got great games for sure. Priced at 30 bucks, there is no reason for anyone not to at least try it out.

Too bad it was labeled as "kiddy" and "not hardcore". Wow, I hated those trite stigmas. Gameplay first, brown second.

funny. The kiddy stigma is the same thing as the "brown" stigma.

Yeah, but kiddy games tend to look more original and inspired.

That is your opinion which i wasn't questioning. No need to defend it. I like all kinds of games and i love the gamecube. I'm just saying that if you poke fun at a trite stigma you should try to not fall into another. At least, not so quickly.

I'm just getting sick of so much hate from both sides. It doesn't help elevate the artform or dialogue. You arn't responsible for it, i know. I just try to point it out when i see it because i know it is easy to fall into and i want to encourage people to think on a game by game basis rather than with sweeping terms and quips.

Good point, and well taken. By nature I try to avoid this conflict, but I often find my preferences attacked. However, this isn't a hostile environment, so my passion is misplaced. I just have the tendancy a lot of people my age do: to exert my opinion as fact (I'm working on it).
