Super FX question
Super FX question
I ran into a copy of "Stunt Racer" and it has the Starfox Super FX chip in it. I have never heard of this game. Anyone ever try it or have any info on it?

Re: Super FX question
I think this had a slightly updated version of the SuperFX chip (compared to Starwing/Starfox).
From all accounts the game was pretty average.

Re: Super FX question
I believe the game used the same chip as Star Fox. You might be thinking of the Super FX2 chip, which was used in fewer games than the original Super FX chip. The only reason I ever heard of Stunt Race FX is because every one always says to use it as a donor cart for Star Fox 2. If it weren't for that, I would have never heard of it.

stunt race fx. . . I have it. Decent game. It's not mario kart though. I wouldn't spend more than $5 or $6 on it.
Re: Super FX question
Yeah, for as relatively low tech as mario kart was, it was a total blast to play. Especially in 2 player mode. Though F Zero kicked its fair share of ass, too.Jrecee wrote:stunt race fx. . . I have it. Decent game. It's not mario kart though. I wouldn't spend more than $5 or $6 on it.

This.
I've read in an old Nintendo Power that Stunt Race FX was developed by both Argonaut Software and Nintendo EAD, who simultaneously developed StarFox, so my assumption is that it uses the same version of the chip.
I think Mega Man X3 and Yoshi's Island used the FX2, however.

Yeah, the SuperFX is the same in Starwing/fox as it is in Stunt Race FX. I also assumed the Super FX2 was a totally different chip design, but it seems it's just double the clock speed (or rather, not clock halved) with extra addressing capabilities.
Megaman X3 used the CX4 chip:

Although playing the game, you'd barely realise it...
Re: Super FX question
Yeah it was the same chip design. The only difference being, as you said, "not halved". And HellHammer, you are correct about SMW2 using the FX2 chip (along with Doom, Winter Gold, and Dirt Racer).

Re: Super FX question
Well to nitpick most early copies of StarFox use a 'Glue-Glob' style chip, while Stunt Racer FX and all subsequent releases and later copies of StarFox used a conventional Silicon style chip which had a slightly better performance and eliminated some slowdown that was present in older first print copies of StarFox.
