Game music- SNES or Genesis?
So me and my brother are constantly at odds over which classic videogames are better. He obvioulsy took the side of Nintendo, and I am sworn and determined to tear him down. On youtube I have found several songs both the Genesis and Super Nintendo played...
From Mega Turrican/Super Turrican:
Super Nintendo:
Genesis:
From Sparkster:
Super Nintendo:
Genesis:
I like the drums on the Genesis better, along with its seemingly brighter tunes. Can you guys find any more examples, and what do you think?

I'm not familiar with the Genesis music, but Zombies Ate My Neighbors would be a good one to compare and contrast between the two platforms.

From all accounts I've heard, the Genesis had a very limited sound output ability. Some games were good enough to know how to make the most of its limitations, but even so, SNES just had better sound quality.

I'm going to have to side with the SNES. Although some musical masterpeices were able to be cranked out on the Genesis, they were probably pushing the limits of the sound synth on the system. Yet with the SNES most of our favorite themes still had room to spare.

I 99% of the time take Genesis over SNES simply because the GEN sound chip is amazing. I love the 80's synthpop style it puts out.

On a technical level I guess I'd say snes has better sound. Just listen to the music from the donkey kong country games. But Sega had the Sonic games which had awesome music.

From a technical standpoint, it's no contest - Super Nintendo by a long-shot. That being said, the Genesis had much more exciting soundtracks. I don't know, it seems like the Super Nintendo ended up with alot of really nice, clean soundtracks trying to reach the caliber of what one might hear in a Disney movie or similar. The Genesis had soundtracks which channeled hip-hop, techno, hardcore, and metal. I personally find the latter more engaging. Don't get me wrong, the Super Nintendo tracks which I'm referring to are impressive; SquareSoft and Enix's use of the Super Nintendo's soundchip was nothing short of astounding, and Nintendo got some nice, cheery, upbeat music out of it, but I the likes of Sega, Technosoft, JVC, and Ancient got some utterly BADASS tunes to pour of the Genesis's stereo speakers.
And to put it simply, the Super Nintendo never produced Sonic the Hedgehog 3's Final Boss Theme, which could be the Genesis's selling point in and of itself.

I have to be honest, while there's no denying that the Genesis had some good tunes, the SNES had some of the best music I've heard to date. Things like the ambient soundtrack of The Donkey Kong Country Series, not to mention the unbelievable quality of the music in all of the square games, with Final Fantasy IV and VI likely leading the pack. Though, I don't know whether you'd judge based on the musical capabilities of each system, or of the best examples from each system.
