What is Final Fantasy?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

If you don't like Mario RPG you should still consider giving Paper Mario a try.

For some reason I love the Paper Mario games but I just can't get into Mario RPG. :?

Yeah Mario RPG and Paper Mario are two similar but completely different games, so you definitely owe it to yourself to try both.

Also most FF's can be blown through in a week or so if you've got a lot of free time, but by only playing the ones you think have cultural significance you're alienating quite a few good games. I'd say to at least play through the SNES & PSone iterations then either try out the PS2 titles, or the first two games in the series (NES, PSone, GBA, PSP) before passing any judgement on the series.
My Consoles:
Genesis - Nomad - SegaCD - GameGear - Sega Saturn - Dreamcast - NES - SNES - N64 - Gamecube - Wii - Playstation - PSone & LCD - PS2 - PS3 - Xbox - 3DS

I missed on a lot of gaming years, and even back then I didn't have much games and never completed them. For example I never completed any mario other than Mario 64 which I did a year or two ago.

So I am going through a lot of stuff with multiple consoles and emulation.
I have a ton of time, but I just can't sit on a game more than 2 hours, it just kills me.

When you have a game list to play as varied as this:
Broken Sword, Oblivion, Metal Gear, Shadow of the Empire, No More Heroes, Bioshock, Shenmue

you realize you can only play so much.
I am making time for FF3 on Snes, and FF7 on psx. I guess its a good choice

You've chosen the top two contenders for "Best Final Fantasy game" if it was put up to a general vote. In fact, the fan base tends to split along the FF6/FF7 line. If you find you don't like either of them I'd recommend you don't bother with the rest of the series.

From my experiences I will give you the basic rundown of the games, I'm known to have a bit of a hectic favorites order though.

FF1 - This and FF4 are my favorites, as this one gave you pretty much gave you your build of characters, and said go explore. Would recommend getting it for GBA as it is easier.

FF2 - This game has a very... different stat system from most traditional RPG's, but a fairly decent story none the less, also the quickest one I have beaten.

FF3 - I have this game for the DS, It goes back to the FF1 formula a lot, which I like, But is brutally difficult at parts.

FF4 - This game took away the ability to customize your party, in favor for more story depth, and also added a new battle system, but this game is very balanced in terms of challenge.

FF5 - The one I have yet to play, I have heard its very good though.

FF6 - If you have never played an RPG before, this game will probably kick your ass right at the beginning, but has probably the best story in the entire series, retains battle system from 4 and 5.

FF7 - I honestly dislike this game, I wouldn't call it the worst in the series, but lets face it, it was very over-hyped and took away almost everything that made Final Fantasy, well... Final Fantasy.

FF8 - I hated it, the worst one, I don't want to go into detail, fuck it.

FF9 - Awesome, but long

FF10 - Not so much too great, but better than 8

FF 10-2 - Never mind about 8, This IS the worst FF game, don't even look at it.

FF11 - MMO, you get it

FF12 - Haven't touched it much, looks cool though.

I probably didn't help much, but I would reconmend 1 on GBA first, or 4 for SNES, DS, or GBA, and no, none of the stories run together (except 10 and 10-2, and now there is a sequel to 4 on Wiiware.)
