The thing I miss in mario galaxy is the way everything felt connected. In mario 64 you jumped into a painting, picked a star, and you were off. In galaxy you have to go through more menus to get to a level, and the main area you had to explore wasn't very big or interesting. I wish they'd do something like in Jak 3, where the whole world flows together. Even if you warp to different areas through pipes or paintings or whatever. Like in mario world everything didn't reset when you finished a level. If you had yoshi you got to keep him until you lost him. Or if you had the cape or other power up you kept that too.
Also a giant HD castlevania would be awesome. I think we're getting to a point graphically where systems are so powerful, that people are becoming more accepting of different styles. I remember people complaining about cell shading when it first came out, and how it looked "cheap" and they'd point to a game with realistic graphics for the time. But now I think everyone has gotten used to hyperrealistic graphics, and the art design is becoming more of a choice more than just pushing as many polygons and lighting effects as possible. The same thing is happening with movies. We can do basically anything with CG now, that movies with purposely unrealistic effects are becoming popular, like sin city or 300.

Although I think any game can be good done right, and that I think older 2D games were/are great in their time, and still fun because they are still the same game. I just can't see how we can get a full 2D commercial game today. I mean what more can you add to it that has not been done back in the 2D days? How can it be more fun than a full 3D world like Oblivion.
I can see puzzles and fighters, but everything else is just too hard to imagine. Can a 2D game make the most of a ps3 hardware? i have seen images like what if Sonic was to be created with today's hardware and it was a 2D platformer with great graphics. But you can't release this to mass audience .
I think we need some one to show us how can a 2D game work in today's world just like Nintendo should us how can we have a 3D platformer with Mario 64.
Speaking of that, why is the 3D platformer genre is dead? Mario, Banjo, and others were some of the best games ever.

How about WarioLand Shake? Lostwinds? Sonic Rush? they all did well at retail as have so many other 2D games recently.
I dont agree that a game cant be fun or offer anything new just because it doesnt offer movement in 3 dimensions or pushes a console to its limit.

Muramasa: The Demon Blade is all 2D and looks fantastic. That's the biggest difference between 16-bit 2D and modern 2D: room for more art assests.

So much. They are the same reasons that you aren't working in the videogame industry.kingmohd84 wrote:I mean what more can you add to it that has not been done back in the 2D days? How can it be more fun than a full 3D world like Oblivion.
Is a game only good if it utilizes all a console has to offer?kingmohd84 wrote:Can a 2D game make the most of a ps3 hardware?
80% of 3D Free-roam "Platformers" were treasure-hunt/collect-a-thons, and people got tired of them. The rest evolved into games such as, Ninja Gaiden, and Devil May Cry.kingmohd84 wrote:why is the 3D platformer genre is dead? Mario, Banjo, and others were some of the best games ever.
Re: Anyone else think this guy is crazy?
What about a game that switches between 2D and 3D? Someone mentioned that 2D games are still great, but a system should not be completely one or the other. What about a game that is not completely one or the other? Or maybe this has been done already and I have not discovered it.
I definitely appreciate what you guys are saying about the possibilities of 2D on the newer systems. I would definitely have fun playing through them, but I still like the direction games are going with 3D and wouldn't want to take a full step back. Guess I like having the best of both worlds.

I was just playing Megaman X7 on the PS2 and it does this exactly... It's not great...vash23n wrote:What about a game that switches between 2D and 3D? Could probably be done better if done by a better company.

Re: Anyone else think this guy is crazy?
I think the big thing we are arguing is that 2D is not a step back. 2D and 3D can both coexist and both create awesome experiences. But they will also be very different experiences. That's why 3D should not supplant 2D.vash23n wrote:I definitely appreciate what you guys are saying about the possibilities of 2D on the newer systems. Plus, there's a difference between 2D graphics and 2D gameplay. Compare Sonic 2 to Sonic Rush. Both have 2D gameplay, but Sonic Rush has 3D graphics. Similarly, Warcraft 2 and Warcraft 3 both have 2D gameplay but Warcraft 3 has 3D graphics. One is not necessarily better than the other.
3D also has some limitations that 2D does not suffer from. With a 2D sprite that measures 200 x 800 pixels in the 32-bit color space you can have as much or as little detail as you want for the exact same cost to your hardware. However, when you increase detail of a 3D model in a space of 200 x 200 x 800 pixels it taxes your hardware more. Additionally, in 2D graphics it is much easier to produce some crazy graphics, like the character attacks in Darkstalkers and Marvel vs. Capcom. Several of the attacks from those games are very difficult to replicate in the 3D space and have them look good.

I feel old when talking to anyone my age yet too inexperienced to effectively talk to anyone older. Life is grand that way.
