Steve Wiebe's E3 2009 Donkey Kong Score Challenge

I wouldn't be surprised if Billy is withholding an unreleased high score; just itching to rain on Wiebe's parade the day he does beat the current record.

My stance is that while Donkey Kong is a cool game, it doesn't matter who can get the highest score. So the fact that there's this drama makes them both douches.

I'll third this, however, allow me rage for a moment.

Just like with anything, if it's competitive, it simply has to be fair. Twin Galaxies might be the 'official' record holders for high scores, but there is always room for bias and error. It's pretty clear to anyone who knows the history behind this insanely dramatic nerd-off that Billy Mitchell hasn't been completely honest and upfront. That alone dethrones him as a champion, in my honest opinion. Even with his massive ego, truly amazing skills, and talks of how 'important playing live' is, Billy Mitchell has been involved in terribly shady, dishonest activities and that by itself takes the fun, heart, and soul out of the entire idea of 'official' record keeping for video games.

Mr. Day and Twin Galaxies can 'take it back', apologize, and do all the 'soul-searching' they want, but the damage is done. Mitchell was looking to stand out among his competitors, even if it meant cheating, and Twin Galaxies was all too happy to immediately eat it up, it's really got nothing to do with Wiebe. They've let their personal relationship with Mitchell compromise their integrity, sportsmanship, and character.

Good thing I'm not going after that Super Ghouls N' Ghosts record anymore... :/

Steve Wiebe did a great job regardless but I think people make too much of a big deal with this rivalry...

You guys should probably keep in mind that the documentary is also intentionally biased in favor of Wiebe. Some of the information presented is fabricated, such as Billy refusing to play or do anything with Steve while they were both at the same arcade.

Plus, I hear his hot sauce is pretty good.

In the doc "King of Kongs: Fistful of Quarters", they make Mitchell out as the bad guy, but if you check wiki on the movie, hes basicly a really cool person.

And as for the VHS tape thing, Twin Galaxies basicly didnt accept the score until either right after the movie was put out. So in a since, Mitchell score doesnt stand. But then again, Mitchell took the title again about 2 years ago.

Sucks he didnt pull it off at E3, but i really give this guy credit at what he does, i got as far as 10k in points on level 3 on a NES rom of the game about over a year ago. So, yea...

Remember that Wiebe was friends with the guys who made the movie.

And please check your facts first as Overload has provided links that should clarify your points. Mitchel is not a referee since a long time ago.

As with everything there are two sides to the story and the truth is probably someplace in the middle.

The most interesting point that you wouldn't know from just watching the movie is that when Wiebe's score was not accepted and he had to come and play live, he wasn't trying to beat Mitchel's score, yet his own high score. He already held the high score, so I don't really get what all the drama was about.

I've also read someplace else that Billy Mitchel's cocky attitude is all an act to bring attention to videogame competition.

My biggest fear is the Wiebe does it... beats the record live... and then Mitchell sends another tape the next day. I would be tight.

Thing is, Twin Galaxies no longer accepts any taped Donkey Kong submissions over 1,000,000 points. It has to be taped and performed in the presence of a Twin Galaxies senior referee for them to accept the score.

I hold no bias against either of the contenders. I realize how slanted KoK was. My stance is if either player can gain the new world record, then they deserve it. So, right now, Billy deserves it. His record score was watched by Walter Day, so the possibility of tomfoolery is unlikely.

They're doing a Narrative film based on the documentary. Not exactly a sequel but another take on the whole thing.
