What games have inspired true adventure in your mind?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Dragon Quest VIII was the grandest of grandest adventures, it has it all. Shadow and Ico are also great adventures as well. Theres nothing quite like them, nothing.

Lode Runner The Legend Returns has the best atmosphere of any game that took place on a single screen with little 16x16 tiles.

Sitting in my basement with the lights off playing that game is like nothing else in the world. Once you start playing it you can't finish it till the end.

for close second is Ocarina of Time.

True story. One time I was playing Super Metroid late into the night, back when I was around 12. Then I realized I was tired and it was time for bed. So I shut off the SNES and head to the bathroom to relieve myself. But as I step down the hall I see a Metroid standing guard outside the bathroom door. And I didn't have an ice beam, so I wouldn't be able to get past it. As a result, I decided to instead use the bathroom in my parent's room, which was right next to my room.

The next day I realized just what happened. All the logic was correct, but the initial assumptions were flawed.

As far as atmosphere, The Warriors for xbox/ps2 made me feel really like a gang member. That is one hidden gem no one knows about.

I am guessing Silent Hill or any RE game pre-4 . I heard the original D was something scary. Never played Eternal Darkness but I think it got what you say. Would World of Warcraft qualify?

I think MMORPG fittest you description best

I would say Shadow of the Colossus. It's funny because there isn't actually much to do in the way of adventuring or exploring other than hunting down the colossus (colossi?). But everything in that game feels epic in scale. I enjoyed just running around the empty land seeing where I could go, where the map ended. It made me actually feel like I was traveling because the environment achieved vastness visually.

To name a few for systems I suspect you have access to- Metroid Prime, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Cave Story, Killer 7, Resident Evil: Code Veronica, System Shock 2, and Bioshock.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I have played most of these games and they are pretty great. Is Morrowind that different than Oblivion? I have only played Oblivion and I haven't really been able to get into it.

I really couldn't tell you why, but Morrowind actually always felt far more immersive. Maybe it's because there were no other continents that were connected that you were blocked from getting to, or maybe it's that some of the world was just so alien that I didn't stop and say "I've seen this" over and over again. Plus, in some ways there was just more stuff, like more styles of combat and armor. Morrowind just felt like a better game to me. Oblivion...I get that feeling of wonder sometimes, but it just never got to me like Morrowind did. Too many Oblivion portals blocking my view, I suppose.
