A long read, but well worth it:

Glad to know (I think) that I'm not the only one that had to correct game store employees.
On The Wisdom Of (Some) EB Employees
my fav conversation
Here's my favorite conversation with a Gamestop employee (I think at the time it was a Software Etc) when I first saw Maximo for PS2 set up to play as a demo in his store:
"Oh cool they used the same music from the original game," I said.
"This IS the original game", the employee said.
"I guess it's not an exact remake but it's based on the old Ghosts & Goblins series in the arcade and several other systems," I replied.
"WELL IT'S CALLED MAXIMO NOW!" the employee screamed at me.
The thing that is the most shocking is how emotional the guy got. He was really worked up.

interesting. on an unrelated note, when i worked at gamestop several years ago we had a middle-aged guy and his kids come in to look around at games. ocassionally one of the kids would say "dad, let's buy this one!" and he'd reply "why? we'll just dup[licate] it". the assistant manager and i just looked at each other each time he'd say that. why take your kids shopping for games if you're just going to copy everything?

I hate those kind of bastards. Backing up is one thing... getting your hands on OLD out of print titles is fine in my eyes. But come on now, duplicate everything? I may have an extensive library of downloaded/backup games. But my legite copies (especially new titles) is even more extensive.grittykitty wrote:interesting. on an unrelated note, when i worked at gamestop several years ago we had a middle-aged guy and his kids come in to look around at games. ocassionally one of the kids would say "dad, let's buy this one!" and he'd reply "why? we'll just dup[licate] it". the assistant manager and i just looked at each other each time he'd say that. why take your kids shopping for games if you're just going to copy everything?
Yes people... all those games on my FTP site... I own MOST of them in original form.
Anyways, Gamestop/similar employees are hit or miss. You've got a lot who are there just to make a buck, you've got a TON of people who think just because they play Madden they are a gamer, and then you have a hand full of real gamers.
In my area we've got several REAL gamers in our Gamestops, the downside to the real gamers is they are the modern 3D gamer. So I always just butt heads with them because I'm more into my retro games. They don't understand my dedication to anti-Sony, they hate my taste in RPGs or interest in SEGA products. I remember a guy gave fought with me to buy Used copies of Katamari Damacy and Grandia 3 when I demanded New copies. He said I'd save 10 bucks, I said that GameArts deserves my money and the guys at Namco who made Katamari deserve some congratulations for making such an addictive cute title. And when I say fought, I had to debate with him for several minutes and make him go in the glass case and get me new copies. He kept saying they were all out... yeah, Grandia 3 is TOP seller. Come on now. Finally he pulled them out for me.
Yes I know... PS2 titles. I don't like SONY, I never buy their hardware. If it is given to me... sure I'll play it. GA and Namco AREN'T Sony.
Although up in Connecticut when it was all Funcolands I used to hang out there and keep people from getting conned. Ugh did it drive me insane the drivel these people would pump into customers. I think it comes with the area though, that is a state where "yeah, fuck you!" is a positive greeting.
This kinda reminds me of what me and my girlfriend would do. I know what you're saying, though. Why come to a store if you're not gonna buy anything? But my girlfriend would like to go to the local video rental spot to look at boxes to figure out what she wanted off of Netflix. She liked to be able to see the big case and whatever, I guess. I didn't really get it, but whatever makes her happy...grittykitty wrote:interesting. on an unrelated note, when i worked at gamestop several years ago we had a middle-aged guy and his kids come in to look around at games. ocassionally one of the kids would say "dad, let's buy this one!" and he'd reply "why? we'll just dup[licate] it". the assistant manager and i just looked at each other each time he'd say that. why take your kids shopping for games if you're just going to copy everything?

I've never gotten anything like that. They always tip tap on their computer and then say yes or no.
I do remember when I helped out this one lady trying to choose between one pacman gba game and another, I told her that the compilation had more games on it while the NES Classic series had just pacman. I also helped out when someone was trying to choose between DK classic nes series and DK vs Mario.
