Re: Sega Did what Nintendidn't
I agree with you Ryan, the NES is the greatest console ever made, if not for the great games, then the fact that the NES is literally the reason we're all even playing anything at all today, given the fact it saved gaming in the west.
My Consoles:
Genesis - Nomad - SegaCD - GameGear - Sega Saturn - Dreamcast - NES - SNES - N64 - Gamecube - Wii - Playstation - PSone & LCD - PS2 - PS3 - Xbox - 3DS

I'm confused now. What happened to the amusing cartoon that reminded me of this community and all of us of the glory days of the mid-90's?

Wait a minute I'm a huge SEGA fan, and never gave a damn about the console wars. I'm simply saying that Nintendo took a shot in the dark releasing the NES in America, and it's success revived the gaming industry. Just give respect where it's deserved because without the NES in America there would have been no Master System and onward in America.

Re: Sega Did what Nintendidn't
you don't really know what would of happened. most probably the north american gaming scene would simply be more centered around the computer, and story games rather than snoozefest japanese rpg's and cartoon tie-in beat-em-ups. perhaps amiga would not go bankrupt. perhaps bill gates would not have become the richest man in the world. perhaps we'd all be using linux right now.. and apple would of stayed where it belongs, on the fringes of the market and used only by their delusional supporters. you get the picture. it may have been a good thing in one respect, but a bad one in many others.
don't get me wrong, i love gologo 13, top gun, & danny sulivan's indy heat on the nes, but hundreds of its games aren't worth the cheap plastic they sold them in.
it's just like any system, no better, no worse. the love for it is astounds me sometimes. i had one and sold it for 20$ because i just couldn't stand looking at it. ugliest sob i ever seen with the most pointy edges.
i kept some of the games and i can always buy one back but in my case, why would i even want to play those has-been games. the snes is much more >>fun<<.
i understand the nes came at a crucial time, and for many people (in the media and on this site) it was their early childhood system so there is a lot of bias and nostalgia. but apple ii was my first system and i f'ing loved it but i have no problem recognizing it was pretty crappy. i mean the best game was sabotage! have it's frogger arcade port recently?
back then it looked crystal clear, now it looks like vomit.

riseup, you are forgetting about Lode Runner, Space Eggs, Ali Baba, and the almighty Prisoner. Those games are what made the Apple ][.

Re: Sega Did what Nintendidn't
riseup, you seem to be missing my point I am speaking about consoles in a mainstream commercial success way, not an underground PC game success way. Also you have to remember that PC gaming is not a good way to represent success in the mainstream market, as in the late 80's PC games got versions made for every different type of computer C64 Amiga Apple II etc.. But the public majority will never accept PC gaming due to one key flaw it has yet to (and probably never achieve) standardization. The average consumer could care less about how well equipped their computer is, they just want to be able to run their ipods, check myspace and watch youtube videos. Consoles onthe other hand give you everything you need right out of the box Controller? check, Cables? , check, Game console equal to the other one my buddy's got? check. Modern PC games are mostly made for Windows alienating potential Mac and linux customers from them, second even if you have windows you still need to make sure your PC is up to par with at least it's minimum requirements. If not you then have to spend as much or more than the price of a current gen console to upgrade, and keep upgrading every six months to a year on average to be able to run new games as they come out.
Nintendo knew exactly why standardization was so important, the original Nes prototype was a PC ala C64 etc.. but was scrapped after they learned from the mistakes that Atari and others made and by not creating any upgrades for the system, not allowing any software to be created which required a peripheral (other than the zapper which was bundled with most NES units sold anyway), and assuring that they would keep their customers from buying a doomed system by instituting the 'Nintendo Seal of Quality' to supposedly keep crappy games to a minimum, they re-gained consumer trust and resolidified a then dying market.
Also the Apple II had a crapload of awesome games so don't even try and say the best game it had was sabotage, and no game is a has been as long as the gameplay remains intuitive and fun.
