Odd Dreamcast Problem

Post by ArwingCmdr »

I recently bought a copy of Sonic Adventure for Dreamcast. It's the all stars edition, just in case it matters. I noticed the strangest problem when trying to play it. Most of the time, about 9 out of 10 times, it fails to boot. When it does boot, I don't get any sound. Every other game I have works fine on my Dreamcast. The strange thing is, I tried it in my friends Dreamcasts and it works fine. Works in 3 other systems, but not mine. Any Ideas?

Does this happen with any other games? If so may be laser lens inside system... 8)

my only suggestion is to clean your laser or possibly have your disc cleaned. unfortunately with older disc based systems and games (and now even ps2 games are starting to do it) you are going to find that for whatever reason, some games will just not play on your particular system. It sounds weird but at my work (play n trade) I clean lots and lots of discs LOTS OF FREAKING DISCS trust me  and,for example, certain games no matter what we do to them just will not play on one or the other of our ps2s but will work perfectly on our other one. Anyway like I suggested, its worth it to clean your laser and possibly have your disc cleaned even if it doesnt look like there is anything seriously wrong with it. if neither of those work then maby think about adjusting your laser.

To answer you question, it ONLY happens with Sonic Adventure. The rest of my collection works flawlessly.

I will try cleaning everything. I am unsure on how to adjust the laser though. Also, do you think maybe a different copy of Sonic could help? This one looks like it has seen better days...

If it's scratched to hell then it's probably a combination of your DC laser having seen better days and the disc just being hard to read.

Don't go and get it 'cleaned' by one of those resurfacing machines. They destroy GD-ROMS, I tried to get my Power Stone resurfaced years and years ago because it started only working intermittently, it completely stopped working after getting it resurfaced.

I guess using one those CD lens cleaners, or a Q tip in high (95% or so) purity alcohol is recommended?

clean laser. i forgot with what.. it says in some manuals, but i think alcohol is not good and q-tips have lint. perhaps an anti-static wipe?

if that doesn't work, and neither does cleaning or shaving the disk with cd-doctor type product..

adjust the laser

it's why 95% of dreamcasts "break". the DC is a very cheap system on the market, but if even half the people who threw theirs out because it was 'broken' bothered to do this, they would cost even less :)

but don't you dare try this on a sega saturn http://www.racketboy.com/forum/viewtopi ... =1&t=13174
