On the topic of Spielberg, I remember reading somewhere that in the mid 90s he loved Panzer Dragoon, a game that definitely has an interesting theme.

And he was involved in the "Indiana Jones and the fate of Atlantis" game if I'm not mistaken. In fact, that was going to be the plot of the fourth Indiana Jones movie.
