I've got a couple of consoles that have some issues, and I'd much rather find out if they can be repaired rather than buying another one.
My PS2 is an old "fat" model, and no longer reads discs, it just makes a loud whirring/clicking noise and doesn't do anything at all. I have heard that this is something to do with the laser guide rail or something; is there a relatively simple way to repair this?
I picked up a Mega Drive very cheaply at a flea market, but it's got some issues. The power LED comes on, but there is no signal on the screen. I have another Mega Drive which runs perfectly, so I know it's not the cables. Therefore, there must be an issue with the A/V section on it.
I'm not terribly good with fiddling with electronics, but if either of these problems are fairly simple to fix I'd love to have some help.
Thanks!

Re: PS2 problem & Mega Drive problem
With the ps2, that's definitely a common issue with the laser. All you have to do is open up the PS2, and tinker with its alignment. Really easy, and hard to mess up. All you have to do is turn a cog a few times. Give it a google search, and a million guides should come up.
Re: PS2 problem & Mega Drive problem
Yeah, Fat PS2 lasers are pretty easy to fix. It's one of the few hardware issues I can resolve myself, and I tend to have performance anxiety over such things.
Re: PS2 problem & Mega Drive problem
Please search. The PS2 problem has been discuessed and solved several times.
The Mega Drive is probably broken beyond feasible repair.
I'd personally try cleaning the disc drive first before adjusting pots. This should only be done as a last resort. I cleaned my laser with a cotton bud and rubbing alcohol and it read PS1 discs long enough to soft mod it and install a hard drive. It's the only thing that keeps it alive.
