Power outages + Video Games = Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Post by SpaceBooger »

The article, Dying to Play Videogames, "is the first study to suggest that generators are commonly used immediately after a large-scale power outage to power entertainment electronics for children," according to the researchers...
...Among the cases of families using gasoline-powered electric generators following the storm, 75% of children were poisoned because the generators were used to power games consoles. The generators emit carbon monoxide.

Wait...so their power goes out, and they're using generators for video games, as opposed to other things one might want or need to run a generator for, such as heaters or refrigeration units?

Does anybody else think they're kinda dumb?

Yep, dumb.

Why would you use a gas-powered generator in your house?

Being from the Houston area... yeah saw a lot of that. Oh, and trying to fall asleep to the sounds of about 30 generators near by....not fun. We didn't have a generator, but I did game during Ike, mostly DS because it was the only handheld I had that was backlit. (pretty important when it's hard to get light)

I love it.

With a name like 'Gaming linked to carbon monoxide poisoning following hurricane' you'd think there was actually some kind of direct connection between the two. And then at the end of the article you're reminded:

"Gas-powered electrical generators should never be used indoors, even with ventilation and a carbon monoxide detector and alarm." Why is this not the name of the article?

Or better yet, "Parents who don't buy GameBoys voluntarily kill their kids."
