Game Play elements that should be buried

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Game Play elements that should be buried

Post by GSZX1337 »

I was watching through some of my favorite episodes of Zero Punctuation and came across Yahtzee's review of Bionic Commando: Rearmed. In the review, Yahtzee lists some retro gaming relics (obnoxious difficulty, humorous quit message, two button controllers, midi music) on some tomb stones. After that list you see another tomb stone with "Lives" written on it. In the background Yahtzee is digging a grave with another tomb stone with "Quick Time Events" written on it.

Anyway, list a new game play element that you would like to see buried. For extra fun here's a screen cap with a blank grave to put some text on.

A game mechanic I'd like to Yahtzee bury is:

Not gameplay really but unskippable cutscenes, it really gets annoying to have to go through a boss' intro over and over again or tons dialogue if you get killed.

But if those were buried, I wouldn't be able to nap during the game anymore. Well, there'd still be loading screens. :P

I couldn't agree more it's very frustrating indeed... 8)

I must say that I'm really no fan of regenerating health in shooters, just like your picture states! It is a tired, overused concept, and it takes away much of that tension in shooters deriving from "where's that next health pack?"... or "How am I going to get through the next firefight without getting hit once?". It also takes away exploration elements, as if one isn't looking for their health, there usually isn't much incentive to explore besides ammo. I literally play Doom more than "modern" shooters such as Halo 3 or Killzone 2. Resistance: Fall of Man, I felt, carried a good compromise, but it still didn't carry with it that same tension.

I personally feel that regenerating health can be good in the right circumstances. Mirror's Edge had regenerating health, but it made sense, as the health was there to ensure you didn't try to run through a gauntlet of guards. But too many games that have regenerating health use it as a method to make the game a bit easier. Instead of having to survive through a level you have to survive through a bunch of small firefights. Each of those encounters is essentially a separate "level".

The only FPS I've played where regenerating health worked was Call of Duty 4, and I really only felt it worked because you really didn't have much health anyway in single player...at least not on the difficulty I played it on. Plus, in a title like that it's more difficult to include health packs, since they don't really make sense. They could put in a combat medic of some kind, but the way the game would handle that would be highly questionable to me. Still, for most FPS...definitely out.

It's not an actual game mechanic, but I'd like to see an end to teabagging...even if I have done it before.

Cannon-Fodder: This really peeves me in RPGs, but just about any game that has cannon fodder is just going to be really annoying.

"Here's a bunch of enemies - they aren't hard, though, and they couldn't kill you unless you stand around, picking your nose for 5 hours - kill all of them to proceed."

It's the gaming equivalent of busy work.

The only game that I've played that got regenerating health right was F.E.A.R. (the first one) and that was because it was limited. The health could only be regenerated up to 25 points. (50 on Easy)
