2d Platformers into 2d action/rpg: Super Metriod.
Really started the whole genre of my favorite games like Castlevania SOTN. Taking that traditional Metroid formula and giving a bit of and rpg twist. It had a world you could explore, items to equip, a map, more of a story, and tons of hidden items. I think modern 2d action games owe alot to this sucker. One could say that Zelda 2 led the way as it's another innovative game in the genre.

Re: Genres that Nintendo Re-Defined
Nintendo definitely has a knack for making a franchise popular forever. I haven't played the new Punch Out!! yet, but I was a little concerned from some of the reviews that it's too familiar and not new enough. Also, are you going to cover how much the original Punch Out!! differed from the arcade version? Seems to me like the hardware limitations of the NES forced Nintendo to make a game that was better than the arcade one.
As for examples of redesigning/reinventing genres, how about what The Legend of Zelda (NES) did for action-adventure games? Still one of my favorite games ever.

Re: Genres that Nintendo Re-Defined
i would argue that pokemon was not as impactful as the mario rpgs, simply because a lot of the stuff in pokemon was a mix of stuff from other games, kinda like dragon quest V(i think), whereas in the mario rpgs in the midst of fighting you had to hit buttons to increase attack and defense power, i dont know another rpg that did that before the mario rpgsnewt42 wrote:I'd say that any of the Pokemon games redefined RPG's more than anything else made by Nintendo.
EDIT: I might be wrong, being a person who has not played any of the Paper Mario games...
p.s.-you should def check out paper mario and the other rpgs, they are good fun

One might say that Nintendo indirectly revitalized the on rails shooter using the Wii. They haven't directly made any games in the genre, but they made the system that revitalized them.
But you definitely could say they redefined the FPS genre with the Wii, with Metroid Prime 3.

id say they did that with the first metroid prime, the only thing that was different on the wii was the controls, not the genre itselfDw1ghtSchru7e wrote:One might say that Nintendo indirectly revitalized the on rails shooter using the Wii. The controls did revolutionize the console FPS. There were previous Wii games that attempted to do good controls, but Metroid Prime 3 was the first one to get it really right.Snickerd00dle wrote:id say they did that with the first metroid prime, the only thing that was different on the wii was the controls, not the genre itselfDw1ghtSchru7e wrote:One might say that Nintendo indirectly revitalized the on rails shooter using the Wii.
