Got a JP Mega CD

Post by Ioncannon »

I have had a japanese Sega Megadrive for a long time (never had a Genesis, and bought it off a couple in a garage sale, to my suprise it was JP), and it plays Genesis games without need of any hacks. I love the look of the model 1 Sega CDs, and even more the JP version. So I got a jp Mega CD, but I am wondering was there any region locks on the cd games? If so, any way to get around it?

Will have to see, I just won it on ebay, have yet to pay. Got it for $17 CAD!!!! It's missing the metal shielding but I don't think that is actually needed right? The seller says he doesn't know if it works, because he didn't have a system to test it on, so I don't know if it even functions.

The Sega CD is region locked, so if it is Japanese it will only play Japanese Mega CD games. There is a Multibios that you can use if you have the chops to do the mod, it will allow you to play games from all 3 regions.

you should be forwarned that the multi bios is a pain in the ass to install and you need atleast decent soldering ability. there are other options though; you could burn your games and just change the region code (but i believe the model one sega cd is less capable of reading burned discs, i may be mistaken), or you could buy one of these genesis flash carts from tototek http://www.tototek.com/store/index.php? ... &cPath=1_6 i've not used one myself but they apparently let the sega cd bypass the region locks plus you get a kick ass flash cart that will hold all your kick ass genny games. unfortunatly they're kind of expensive.

I am very tempted by your offer Token. Once it arrives I'll see if it works, and get back to you. Can I get pics of the Sega CD? Another question... will a NA Sega CD work with a JP Mega Drive? If not, will have to get that Genesis I saw in Value Village a few days ago.

If it is a model 1 there is a very high chance that it will not work, but good luck and fingers crossed.

Juuuuust my luck... so got the Mega CD and plug it in... drive tray doesn't open, and the music is really choppy (graphics are smooth tho). The LEDs are flashing indicating it thinks the drive is open. So I open the sucker up and pull out the tray. The gears still attach to the tray and it fully opened YAY. Problem is, it's having trouble fully closing the tray, and still can't detect that it's closed. Any way to align the gears or something?
