Top 10 8-bit and 16-bit Console Fighters

Post by timewarpgamer »

It was a relatively young genre back in the day; nevertheless, numerous great fighters appeared on these old-school consoles back in the day. Here are my top 10:

Still plenty of room for honorable mentions...Did I miss anything? Over-value any games? Bring it on!

Primal Rage btw! ! Great list by the way! I have fond memories of beating people up in the Genesis version of Mortal Kombat... so much fun!

Eh... Primal Rage on the SNES/Genesis is nothing but a sad, lifeless shell of the PSX/Saturn/Jaguar/Arcade versions.

Glad to see the Weaponlord mention - I just recently got that game and was surprised that I never heard of it. Much better than I expected.

Unfortunately, can't really think of any fighters to add to the list. Console 2D Fighters didn't get to be really great until the Saturn/PlayStation era ... an era when everybody else decided they were done with 2D, unfortunately.

Edit: Wait a tick - TMNT: Tournament Fighters were actually pretty good. The NES, SNES and Genesis versions are all very different, with the SNES version usually cited as the superior version.

There's also Saturday Night Slam Masters... sure, it's a Wrestling game, but it still had a very 2D Fighter atmosphere.

I agree, the home console ports of Primal Rage in the 16-bit era are pretty much trash.

I would say Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Tournament Fighters does deserve a place on the list, at least I felt it was a good game. It did give me the super bar, after all. But I also really enjoyed Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers: The Fighting Edition. And what is this lack of mention for the SNES version of Street Fighter Alpha 2? It's perhaps one of the most impressive SNES games out there, and easily the most expensive fighter in the US on the console.

Personally, I think you ought to cut this list up a bit. It's tough to compare 8-bit to 16-bit fighters, and truthfully, I'd say even separate the Genesis, Sega CD, and SNES titles, but that's just me. I'm really happy to see Power Instinct get some love. Most folks I know despise the Samurai Shodown release for the SNES, though for the longest time it was my only contact with that series.

I do have to ask...why Mortal Kombat II? Why not MK3 or UMK3? I realize the original MK has its problems, especially the SNES port(Genesis was superior, hands down). But why don't the later entries ever get any love?

Did you know Street Fighter 2 was also released on Sega Master System? Actually a Brazil-only release by Tectoy, but still official, of course :)

I'm surprised to not see Asuka 120%, Art of Fighting, or Flash Hiders even on the recommended list. Great fighters, all.

Theres way too many awesome fighters to list. One question to Primal Rage fans. Can it be emulated through MAME smoothly nowadays? Or is it still glitchy last I checked was like 3 years ago.
