The incentives to buy American are making me think. If I buy a Ford, I get invoice price on the car -10% through my employer since we do so much business with them. Stack that on top of the dealer incentives and I could really make out on this deal. Should I sell my 09 Matrix XRS and get an American car and come out with cheaper monthly payment? Or stick it out and keep my Toyota? I might check out the Ford dealership this weekend and see what they could do for me. If the numbers look good, I might come out with a Mustang GT or Flex. And thanks for fixing that King.

Could you guys elaborate a little on the maintenence cost of these cars? besides the entry level expenses of getting the car ready to go, there are only a few things I've actually heard about on these things costing a lot to fix, like getting new tires.
Also, do they need leaded gas?

No problem, I didn't even notice that till you said something. If you can get a car you'd like for less money per month then it's a no brainer to me. If your employer does business with GM you could really make out on a new car, might as well pretend they do at the Ford dealership this weekend to see how much they'll work with ya.

I'll be honest Apprentice, anything very old and very German will cost lots of money to fix. Thats a undisputable fact. Parts aren't always available and finding a cheap mechanic that specializes in VWs can be difficult. And make sure it has rear window defrosters, to keep your hands warm in the winter when your pushing it to the overpriced mechanic. Not to derail this topic even more than it might already be, but was there ever a thread here about what type of cars Racketboy forum members drive? I don't care much about cars but would be vaguely interested to know if there are any strange/unique/scary cars being driven by us retro gamers. I drive a Prius--so nothing exotic here.
On topic: my brother has owned 2 or 3 VWs (nothing classic, just some newer models) and has had mixed experiences. There have been a few additional VWs in my family over the years, also with mixed rates of maintanence issues.

You are the one that brought up the American car companies in your thread about Voklswagens, not me.
I would actually love to hear your rant on the work ethics of the American car companies when you are worried about about the type of car your mommy and daddy are going to buy you.

I own a 70 beetle that has been my daily driver for about a year and a half now. Its no lie that you MUST maintain it. I have seen many an idiot kill these cars only because they can't check the damn oil. Its AIR COOLED (no radiator) so people forget how important the oil level is in these things. In terms of parts being hard to find, that holds true for the bus and ghia more than the beetle. Pick up a JC Whitney catalog and they will pretty much have anything you would ever need or want. The Beetle is the second most mass produced car of all time under the Corolla, and the majority of parts are interchangable, so junk yards can be a big help too if you want to save some cash.
What im saying is if you want a VW get a beetle and save yourself some headaches later on.
EDIT: Just noticed your question about leaded gas. No. I recommend using premium though, and search for a gas station that doesnt use a gas/ethanol mix. It terms of maintaining it, just make sure to change that oil and keep it filled, change the fuel filter fairly often, and take it in about once a year to a professional to have the valves, timing, and carb adjusted.
