So why do you retro-game?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

I like to collect I like rare things and searching for things and the history etc.
Also prefer 2D (and it can be much cheaper sometimes to than current gen) the games are more simple with greater replay
some of it is nostalgia but not much I'm 20 and didn't start gaming till I was seven so the nastalgia is limited

Well, in pretty much any generation, I can only afford to go with one system and just squeeze as much out of it as I can. I retro game because there were many games I always wanted to play but missed out on during 'The Great Console Wars'. Just as I'm sure two or three generations from now, I'll catch up on all the great games of this generation I missed.

Yeah, same here. Also, as mentioned by Unleaded Logic, superlarz and opethfan it reminds me of my childhood and I love to collect and replay classics. I also enjoy the history of retro gaming and collecting brings back great memories. I see it as coming to my own personal library but with games/memorabilia spanned across many generations.. I also retro-game to go back to simpler times and simplicity of games.. 8) It also helps that the consoles can be picked up on the cheap..

I think I retro game these days because I actually forgot how good the old experiece of playing a particular game was.
Also I like seeing different versions of the same game and how it translated to a particular Gaming platform. In the old days it was about obtaining that Arcade perfect experience in the home so I went after consoles like the Sega Master system , Sega Megadrive , Super Nintendo when they released street fighter and so on. Any console that promised arcade perfection I was there lol.

But these days I'm interested in seeing how a game translated onto a platform . I mean the 8bit home computer era was roaring even during the times when I was playing home consoles I knew quite a few people still playing their Spectrums , Amstrads , Atari St's and Amiga's I completely missed out on that side. So I guess another reason would be to all the different versions of a game. I was reading on World of Spectrum the other day that Ghouls n Ghosts cost something in the region of 10 pounds for me that was loads of money in those days. I wouldn't have touched anything with crappy graphics in the old days but now I'm looking at how well developers worked with the hardware and start seeing that games with inferior graphics to other consoles but are good conversions for that particular console so therefore have Good graphics.

So in short I guess its the fact that I get to see what I missed out on and of course relive my earlier days. I think when a person has a nostalgia for a game even if it doesn't hold up well in modern days that nostalgia enhances your experience of that game :)

I started collecting and playing old games to wallow in the nostalgia factor but now I find myself drawn more and more towards the games and systems that I never owned. I find playing the games that I used to love dilutes my rose tinted memories of them, but discovering gems that are new to me is much more rewarding.
I also like to sample dead genres (I'm having an FMV month this month) or genres that have evolved considerably such as arcade racers. The cheapness factor is also a huge draw, I can play some of the greatest games ever and it only cost me a few quid rather than dropping £40 on the flavour of the month.

I get scared when I hear some one does not know the Super Nintendo and even worse an N64...shows I am growing up. EVERYONE KNOWS THE SNES AND PLAYED IT.

A lot of it is for the nostalgic effect, but truth to be told its easier to look back 20 years and pick up the greatest games ever and they are definitely and enjoyment. Its impossible to go wrong with FF7, Mario 64, or Resident Evil. Yet if you are waiting for the next mass effect or God of War here is what:
-It costs multiple times more
-It can be a let down or not up to the hype(haze)
-You wait a lot until the game is released(older games are on shelves or a download away  )
-Satisfaction guaranteed on Retro games.

But I do not think any one gets a kick out of playing atari 2600 games, I mean its so basic its stupid. The graphics are mainly blocks. For games to be enjoyable I say they have to be NES and later, whatever was before is like dead and not worth playing (Except for nostalgia). Except for few games like pac-man, tetris (if existed), space invaders. Its hard to believe pong can still be exciting.
