If Sony started selling PS3s with BC for $300, they'd go broke in a matter of weeks. You are simply asking way too much of it. If you break down the components of a PS3, you are getting a huge fucking bargain - mostly because of the Blu-Ray. And you can nit-pick all you want, but without the Blu-Ray, MGS4 would probably be a seven-disc long game.

As for "Half the playability, twice the price", speak for yourself. I play my PS3 everyday. I haven't played my Wii since 12/23/08 (Smash Bros for 15 minutes), and the only time I picked it up was to give it to a good friend of mine in exchange for $225. (A decision I admittedly regret now, with the announcement of Tatsunoko vs Capcom, but it would be fucking stupid at this point to buy a Wii again just for one game.)

The real issue is that until fairly recently there wasn't a lot that the PS3 had over the 360. The cross platform games would look essentially equal on both systems, the 360 tends to get some exclusive downloads, and there weren't many PS3 exclusives worth owning initially. So for most consumers they see that the PS3 costs a lot more than the 360 but it doesn't give an improvement over the 360 experience. Thus, it's not worth the high price tag.

Yeah, but the "It has no games" issue has been dead for at least a year now. While it still may not have as many games as the 360, it does have a good number of exclusives, and those exclusives are usually high quality (Sure, there is the somewhat disappointing Heavenly Sword and the utterly bad Lair, but those were launch titles and thus not the main part of this argument) and cover a wide range of genres.

During its first year and a half, getting the PS3 was a pretty poor decision. It's why I proudly went with the Wii. But just as the Wii had an extremely strong first year and quickly bottomed out afterwords, I'd say the PS3 started extremely poorly and is quickly rising.

At this point, I'd say the only reason to get an X360 is if you are a huge Halo, Gears of War or Behemoth Company fan, or you really don't care for the PS3 exclusives. Not to say that makes the 360 a bad choice. Personally, if either region locking goes away or RRoD is destroyed, I'd get one just to play all the Shmups out in Japan. (There's no way I'm importing a Japanese X360 just to have it RRoD, and me not be able to return it.) If you already have a 360, there is no reason to regret it - It's just if you are sitting on the fence about 360 vs PS3 today, I think the PS3 has plenty on its side these days.

Yeah, I know $400 is a lot of cash to blow. I'm just telling you that I have yet to regret any of that money being blown on the PS3. It's all about preference, I guess. I personally wanted a system that would be able to play emulators without having to pay out the ass for ROMs, and Linux on PS3 answered that call for me. Another reason I wanted a PS3 was because - as backwards as this sounds - most my friends own 360s. I didn't have to worry about missing out on Ninja Gaiden 2, Dead Rising, GoW1&2 or Bioshock - I could just go to a friends house and play them. But the biggest selling point for me was that it was region-free. I imported a few games for the SNES, Genesis and PlayStation, but the Saturn really made me into an import gamer - and PS3 is by far the easiest system to play imports on.

Anyway, that's my two cents. Sorry for the tl;dr.

....maybe if they take out blueray they will lower the price and you guys will buy it, but then maybe better...lets take out the built in wifi...AND THEN!!! for the hell of it...lets just shut down the FREE online play. Wait...I spent how much, and I have built in wifi...free online play...blueray player...and i can swap in a 320gb harddrive? Point is this, you guys hate the price...but how much does the 360 really offer. Yep its cheaper, I still remember spending 399$...100$ for the wifi, and what was it...50$ for a year of online play? Every console has its ups and downs, but as far as who tried to make the most out of a TRUE next generation console...I would have to say sony.

And before anyone jumps on my back with a ballbat...I do still own a 360.
Yep, I know im the one ya love to hate.

Oh, I agree with you fully 7k. I picked up a warehouse damaged (box was mangled, system was fine) 60GB PS3 for about $450, and I haven't regretted it one bit. But really, as you mentioned, the PS3 had a piss poor launch, and then once it started to have some worthwhile stuff they removed the BC. Now, pretty much everyone who goes here is not adverse to running 18 consoles on one TV. But the layman is pissed now because he has to keep his PS2 hooked up if he wants to play those games. It doesn't really make sense, especially since a lot of these people are the guys who sell back all their games to Gamestop once they've played them once.

I think whoever wants a ps3 can wait and I think eventually BC is going to come back.

The only reason to get ps3 is current generation games and if you want those(if you own pc/360 no reason for the extra ps3).
I really see no exclusives worthwhile to purchase the ps3, I mean they do not justify the price.
If you really want to buy one for the exclusives then you might want to enjoy your time with other consoles
until the price drops and so the other games prices will drop too. Mean while I am sure you have a wii/ps2/Dreamcast or something you want to play some games on that you missed on.

If its 360 vs PS3 battle, it was no competition back when ps3 launched, 360 for sure. Now its personal choice do
you want gears, halo, fable or do you want GT, god of war, and MGS.

I am a 360 guy specially that I hate GT, and really like the 360 controller, I also really like the online community of the 360 with all the videos and downloads, I also hate the Sony system menu.

I might pick up the ps3 if I had HDTV because the blu-ray player justifies the price a bit, but no HDTV and where I am region 1&2 are used almost equally and we all know its impossible to change that in ps3.

It is really a personal choice now.

companies never make money on hardware, they get it on the back end with software. its like printers and ink. do you think a company can make a profit selling $30 printers or is it the $25 ink? at $60 per game theres tons of money to be made. id buy 10 games today if i could get it for 299. instead, ill wait. for 500, ill buy another arcade, a ton of old games, and still have money left over.

Well, as Popo just pointed out, Nintendo is making a killing on hardware. Yes, systems are fully expected to hemorrhage money - in the first year. It's expected that by then, they will have figured out more efficient ways to build systems, cheaper parts, advances in technology, etc.

Sony hasn't exactly had much luck with that. The only advancement I remember hearing about was something about a cheaper-to-produce laser, but that's about it.

This isn't the first time I've heard Gears, Halo and Fable vs GT, God of War and MGS. In fact, I hear it ALL THE TIME. It is the BIGGEST straw-man argument I've ever seen. GT is not a complete game. God of War isn't even out yet.

When I was making my decision on what to buy, I put Gear against Resistance, not GT5. Why does no one mention Resistance? GoW1 vs R1 was no question to me - R1 had the best co-op. GoW1, I played through with a friend in a few hours.

What about Uncharted? Valkyria Chronicles? Killzone 2? Ratchet & Clank? Little Big Planet?

I'm getting sick of people putting the 360's heaviest of hitters against the PS3's weakest links. It's like having a rottweiler fight a poodle. Gears, Halo and Fable vs. Killzone 2, Little Big Planet and Valkyria Chronicles? Now we have rottweiler versus a pit bull. Now we're cooking with fire.

The PS3 exclusives are seriously lacking. The only PS3 exclusive Im interested in is GoW3 and like has been mentioned...it is not even out yet. Im very happy with my 360. However if sony can turn things around I have absolutely no problem buying another console.
